Wiggler,[1] also known as Boss Hana,[2] is a character in Super Mario Sunshine. It is a giant green Wiggler who appears as the boss of Gelato Beach.
Wiggler first appears in the episode "Mirror Madness! Tilt, Slam, Bam!" where it sleeps on top of the glass case housing the Sand Bird egg, blocking sunlight and delaying its hatching. Mario has to correctly angle three mirrors after removing the Plungelos found on them so that the resulting sunlight causes Wiggler to fall off the case, revealing a Shine Sprite.
Wiggler's second appearance and actual battle take place in "Wiggler Ahoy! Full Steam Ahead!" where Mario has to fight an enraged Wiggler. It moves very quickly, and it can damage Mario if he attempts to touch it in any way. Wiggler also blows steam from its nose when it takes damage or when Mario sprays water at its head, making a sound like a steam locomotive in the former case. Mario can stun Wiggler by spraying Dune Buds with water when it approaches them. This causes Wiggler to flip onto its back and become harmless to touch in the process. While Wiggler is flipped over, a weak point is revealed on any one of Wiggler's segments, which Mario must ground-pound to deal damage to it. After taking damage, Wiggler gets back up and resumes its rampage. Additionally, each time Wiggler takes damage, it moves faster, and the boss music speeds up as well, making it the only boss in the game with this distinction. After Wiggler has been damaged three times, it turns into sand, revealing another Shine Sprite.
The Wiggler Wagons in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! found on Mushroom Bridge and in Mushroom City bear resemblance to this Wiggler.

Notes[edit]
- Due to a glitch, if the player presses the
button as soon as Wiggler is defeated and is beginning to turn into sand, the music will slow down even more than in normal gameplay.[8] - In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Petey Piranha, Mom Piranha, and the Big Piranha Plants, respectively, use some of Wiggler's sound clips.
- Unlike other Wigglers in the franchise, this specific Wiggler does not turn red when getting angry. It only briefly flashes red when Mario damages it.
