Smithy is the main antagonist and final boss of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its Nintendo Switch remake, as well as the titular leader of the Smithy Gang, an organization that attempts to rule over Mario's world in the game. In order to do that, Smithy tries to get rid of the power of wishes from the world and, in its stead, fill the world with weapons. He is a tall dark-gray mechanical creature that wears a gold crown and has an extremely long white beard; the Nintendo Player's Guide has compared his appearance to that of Santa Claus. Smithy hails from another world that is accessible by the gateway provided by Exor. In his world, he resides in his Factory, where he creates anthropomorphic weapons that he uses against other worlds. It is also implied during the final battle that multiple versions of him were made and that there were possibly plans to mass-produce him, due to the various heads littered in his final battle arena.

Smithy's name is derived from the word "smith," which is someone who manipulates various materials and alloys, such as a blacksmith. A smith's workshop is sometimes called a smithy as well.
History
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Prior to his invasion, Smithy gets Exor to occupy Bowser's Keep; in its descent, Exor shatters the Star Road, the source of wishes in the world. Once there, Smithy defeats Bowser and his minions and establishes his base of operations in Bowser's Keep of Mario's world (while Smithy's Factory remains the main headquarters of the Smithy Gang).

Smithy is the diabolical leader of the Smithy Gang, an organization that attempted to take over the world during the events of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. To do this, Smithy tried to eliminate the power of wishes from the world and, additionally, fill the world with his weapons. He is a gray mechanical monstrosity that wears a gold crown and has a long, white beard. As such, he resembles a diabolical Santa Claus. He hails from another dimension, a dimension that is accessible by the gateway Exor. In his dimension, he resides in his Factory, where, day and night, Smithy creates mechanical monsters to be unleashed against the peaceful people of other dimensions.
Smithy then sends his lieutenants to retrieve the Star Pieces after learning the pieces have potential to restore wishes to the world. Smithy does not want anyone returning the Star Pieces to the Star Road, as the road's recovery would allow the power of wishes to counter the power of the Smithy Gang's weapons and interfere with his attempt of world conquest.

Biography
However, Mario, Mallow, Geno, Princess Peach, and Bowser prevent Smithy from carrying out his plans, and they obtain the Star Pieces from his lieutenants. They then arrive at Bowser's Keep and enter Smithy's world via Exor. Once they confront Smithy, he is busy creating new weapons and is revealed to have the last Star Piece embedded in his body, presumably to prevent anyone from restoring the power of wishes to the world. Smithy calmly asks Mario to turn over his Star Pieces, but Mario refuses and battles Smithy instead.

The Initial Invasion
Smithy wields a giant metal sledgehammer in battle, which he uses with his right hand. The fingers of his left hand have been fitted with small projectile launchers that he uses to fire bullets at Mario and his allies. Some of Smithy's magical powers involve summoning a giant wooden sledgehammer to crush Mario and his allies and summoning meteors. In battle, Smithy is also aided by Smelter. Smelter produces molten metal from his mouth, which Smithy then shapes into Shypers, who immediately enter the battle and begin attacking Mario's party.

At the start of his invasion of the Mushroom World, Smithy ordered the sword Exor to occupy Bowser's Keep. Once there, Smithy established his base of operations in Bowser's Keep (however, Smithy's Factory was still the main headquarters of the Smithy Gang). During the battle that ensued, Bowser's forces were either eliminated or had defected to the Smithy Gang. With the Koopa Troop out of the picture, Smithy set his sights on the rest of the world.
After Smithy is defeated, he becomes infuriated and begins slamming the floor with his sledgehammer. A few of his minions arrive, begging him to calm down and to stop smashing the floor (as the foundation was just built the day before). However, Smithy ignores their warnings and continues pounding the floor. As a result, the floor collapses; Mario, his allies, and Smithy fall into the basement of the factory. Once there, Smithy reveals his true form: a metal shape-shifter.

Additionally, during the initial invasion, Exor accidentally shattered the Star Road, the source of wishes in the world. Although he did not know this at the time, without the power of wishes in play, Smithy would have an easier time conquering the planet.
Although his body remains the same, Smithy can now use his sledgehammer to turn his head into different forms. Smithy has five heads that he can change into:
*The Normal Head, which he uses to switch to the other heads. This head remains only during the first few turns of the battle. Once he first changes his head to a new form, his original head never returns aside from brief appearances in between form changes.
*The Tank Head, which has extremely powerful physical attacks. It also has high physical defense and can attempt to KO a party member instantly. It is weak against lightning-based attacks.
*The Magic Head, which has the most powerful magical attacks in the game but has weak defense. To compensate, it does not have an elemental weakness.
*The Mask Head, which is used for increased protection and defense and also for healing Smithy's HP. It boasts the highest physical defense. It is weak to ice-based attacks. In the remake, it is instead called Casket.
*The Treasure Head, which attacks Mario's party with a random status ailment. It is weak to fire-based attacks.

After Smithy is defeated, Mario and his allies overheat Smithy's body, which then explodes as a result, and the last Star Piece is recovered by Mario and his allies. With all seven Star Pieces in hand, Geno is able to repair the Star Road and restore the power of wishes to the world, thus ending the Smithy Gang invasion.

Weapons and Wishes
At the end of the game, a parade is held in celebration of the end of the invasion. Smithy, in his original bearded form, appears during the parade, riding atop The Blade. Many Shymores and several of his lieutenants also appear alongside Smithy. As he flies by on The Blade, he pounds his minions Claymorton, Bowyer, and Speardovich with his sledgehammer.

Super Mario-kun
Smithy appears in volume 51 of Super Mario-kun, in the adaptation of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. After the Director poisons the heroes with spiked drinks, Mario is unaffected by the poison, and Smithy steps in to take care of him. Immediately, he squashes him with Sledge. Seeing him in trouble, Bowser and Mallow lend their special techniques to Mario: Bowser Crush (which backfires on Mario) and Shocker, which seems to kill Smithy, but he reveals his true form and unleashes his rage on Mario with Magnum, Spear Rain, and Arrow Rain with the Tank and Sorcerer heads. Geno, having been previously forced to replace Peach at the castle, returns, ready to help Mario in the final fight, but he drinks the Director's spiked drink and is knocked down like the others, so he also resorts to passing his special technique, Geno Flash, to Mario. Turned into a cannon, Mario shoots at Smithy, vanquishing him once and for all.

Once Bowser's Keep was occupied, Smithy sent out his various lieutenants to terrorize the people of the world and to recover the Star Pieces needed to restore the power of wishes to the world. Smithy did not want anyone returning the Star Pieces to Star Road.
Personality
His lieutenants did as follows:
Although originally depicted as a calm and collected leader, Smithy is revealed to be highly ill-tempered, as shown by his fit of rage upon being defeated the first time by Mario and his allies, which culminates in Smithy destroying his recently built floor. Additionally, in the aforementioned fit of rage, Smithy violently repels three of his henchmen who are simply trying to calm him down, showing a lack of care for his own subordinates.

* The knife monster Mack conquered the Mushroom Kingdom and acquired the first Star Piece.
Ultimately, Smithy is determined to achieve world conquest through the Smithy Gang, confident that his weapons can serve as the basis of his power. As such, Smithy attempts to prevent the restoration of wishes, since the Star Road and the dreams of individuals represent a direct threat to Smithy's reign.

* The bow creature Bowyer attacked the people of Rose Town with poisoned arrows and recovered the second Star Piece.

However, all of Smithy's operations were foiled by Mario and his allies Mallow, Geno, Princess Peach, and (strangely enough) King Bowser. Occupied towns were liberated and the Star Pieces fell into the hands of Mario's party.

Eventually, Mario's band of heroes liberates Bowser's Keep and enter Smithy's dimension via Exor. Once there, they plan to eliminate the threat of Smithy and his weapons once for all. The heroes battle past mechanical minions and the factory's management staff, eventually reaching the supreme leader of the Smithy Gang in his forge. Smithy is busy creating new weapons when Mario and company first meet him. As it turns out, Smithy had the last Star Piece embedded in his body, to prevent anyone from restoring the power of wishes to the world. Smithy calmly asks Mario to turn over his Star Pieces, and when Mario refuses, an epic battle commences.

Smithy has a variety of physical and magical attacks at his disposal. For starters, the mechanical leader wields a giant metal sledgehammer in battle, which he uses with his right hand. The fingers of his left hand have been fitted with small projectile launchers which he uses to fire bullets at Mario and his allies. Smithy also commands great magical power. He can summon a giant wooden sledgehammer to drop from the ceiling and crush all of Mario's allies. Additionally, Smithy can summon powerful meteors to attack Mario's party.

In battle, Smithy is aided by the creature Smelter. Smelter produces hot liquid metal from his mouth which Smithy then shapes into the mechanical minions known as Shypers. Shypers are one of the strongest minions in the Smithy Gang. Once created, Shypers automatically begin attacking Mario's party. As such, it is wise for Mario and his allies to defeat Smelter first, cutting off Smithy's unlimited supply of soldiers. After that, the heroes can focus their attacks on the diabolical Smithy.

Eventually, Mario and company defeat Smithy in combat. The mechanical leader becomes infuriated and begins slamming the floor with his sledgehammer. A few of his minions arrive, begging him to calm down and to stop smashing the floor (as it was just built the day before). However, an enraged Smithy ignores their warnings and keeps pounding the floor. Once there, Smithy reveals his true form: he is not a bearded mechanical monster, he is a shape-shifter. Although his body remains the same, Smithy can use his sledgehammer to morph his head. Smithy has five heads that he can change into to:

* The Normal Head with average physical and magical attack and defense.
* The Tank Head, which has extremely powerful physical attacks.
* The Magic Head, which wields the most destructive magical attacks in the game.
* The Mask Head, used for increased protection and defense.
* And the Treasure Box Head, which attacks Mario's party with a random status ailment.

*Smithy was a character nominated for "Best Villain" in the 1996 Nintendo Power Awards. He received third place. Smithy lost to Bowser (from Super Mario 64), who received second place, and Boba Fett (from Shadows of the Empire (video game)), who received first place.

*Smithy's rain attacks may represent some of the members of the Smithy Gang. Spear Rain represents Speardovich, Sword Rain represents Claymorton and/or Exor, and Arrow Rain represents Bowyer.
Personality
*Smithy has two official renders. The first depicts him with yellow "tube" arms and the hammer raised. The second is closer to his final design and shows him with chain-link arms and the hammer down. Neither render depicts his red feet that appear on his in-game sprite.

Smithy is largely megalomaniacal and highly ill-tempered, as shown by his fit of rage upon being defeated the first time by Mario and his allies, which culminated in him destroying his recently built headquarters. Smithy appears largely apathetic as well, not caring about the destruction he causes and the fact that he stopped the wishes and dreams of others to go unfulfilled, additionally, in the aforementioned fit of rage, Smithy apparently destroyed three of his henchmen who were simply trying to calm him down.

Another defining trait of Smithy's is his obsession with weapons. While his body seems to be built as an actual robot, all of his servants are modeled after weapons of some kind.

Trivia
* Because Exor is the first member of Smithy's gang to be seen in the game and because he introduces the gang to Mario, it is not uncommon for players to believe at first that Exor is Smithy, rather than one of his lieutenants.

* Smithy was a character nominated for "Best Villain" in the 1996 Nintendo Power Awards. He received third place. Smithy lost to Bowser (from Super Mario 64) who received second place, and Boba Fett (from Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire) who received first place.

* According to a Drill Bit which comes to aid Smithy upon his first defeat, he implies that Smithy has bad blood pressure when he becomes infuriated by Mario and his party when the Drill Bit says, "...think of your blood pressure." This statement is ironic as Smithy is revealed to not be human but more of a metallic entity.

* During Mario and his party's final battle with Smithy (which takes place in the dungeon of his Factory) several robotic heads that look identical to Smithy's are seen.

* Smithy is the first Mario villain that posed as a threat to Bowser.

Smithy, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Smithy is the main antagonist and final boss of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its Nintendo Switch remake, as well as the titular leader of the Smithy Gang, an organization that attempts to rule over Mario's world in the game. In order to do that, Smithy tries to get rid of the power of wishes from the world and, in its stead, fill the world with weapons. He is a tall dark-gray mechanical creature that wears a gold crown and has an extremely long white beard; the Nintendo Player's Guide has compared his appearance to that of Santa Claus.[1] Smithy hails from another world that is accessible by the gateway provided by Exor.

History[edit]

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]

Mario using his Lazy Shell attack on Smithy
Mario and his party battle Smithy.

Smithy's tank head

Smithy wields a giant metal sledgehammer in battle, which he uses with his right hand. The fingers of his left hand have been fitted with small projectile launchers that he uses to fire bullets at Mario and his allies. Some of Smithy's magical powers involve summoning a giant wooden sledgehammer to crush Mario and his allies and summoning meteors. In battle, Smithy is also aided by Smelter. Smelter produces molten metal from his mouth, which Smithy then shapes into Shypers, who immediately enter the battle and begin attacking Mario's party.

Although his body remains the same, Smithy can now use his sledgehammer to turn his head into different forms. Smithy has five heads that he can change into:

 • The Normal Head, which he uses to switch to the other heads. This head remains only during the first few turns of the battle. Once he first changes his head to a new form, his original head never returns aside from brief appearances in between form changes.
 • The Tank Head, which has extremely powerful physical attacks. It also has high physical defense and can attempt to KO a party member instantly. It is weak against lightning-based attacks.
 • The Magic Head, which has the most powerful magical attacks in the game but has weak defense. To compensate, it does not have an elemental weakness.
 • The Mask Head, which is used for increased protection and defense and also for healing Smithy's HP. It boasts the highest physical defense. It is weak to ice-based attacks. In the remake, it is instead called Casket.
 • The Treasure Head, which attacks Mario's party with a random status ailment.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

Smithy in Super Mario-kun

Personality[edit]

Although originally depicted as a calm and collected leader, Smithy is revealed to be highly ill-tempered, as shown by his fit of rage upon being defeated the first time by Mario and his allies, which culminates in Smithy destroying his recently built floor. Additionally, in the aforementioned fit of rage, Smithy violently repels three of his henchmen who are simply trying to calm him down, showing a lack of care for his own subordinates.
