Yoob is a giant Yoshi-like creature created by the Shroobs that appears in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. He starts out as a large magenta and green egg on Yoshi's Island, where it becomes an attraction that tourists can see for five coins. When Yoob hatches from the egg, he begins to eat all of the Yoshis in the surrounding village.

Yoob is a giant, Shroob-created Yoshi that terrorized Yoshi's Island during the events of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. The creature known as Yoob originally started out as an abnormally large pink and green Yoshi Egg. One day, this egg mysteriously arrived on Yoshi's Island (presumably placed on the island by the Shroobs). Although no one knew where it came from, the mysterious egg instantly became a tourist attraction. For a mere five coins, tourists could actually witness the enormous egg close-up. However, the egg soon hatched, and the monstrous Yoob was released. Since Yoob was apparently programmed by the Shroobs to eat Yoshis, the monster started terrorizing the island, eating every Yoshi in sight.

Yoob is first seen in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time after he discovers a group of Yoshis still hiding from him on Yoshi's Island. He quickly eats all of them when they try to run away, including Yoshi and Kylie Koopa, although Kylie is quickly spat out. Yoob then leaves the area, though he is later seen eating and spitting out Kamek after the quartet find him on the island. After the adult and baby Mario Bros. defeat Kamek and corner Baby Bowser at the cliff, Yoob climbs to where they are, and two Shroob saucers appear and enlarge him. Yoob then proceeds to eat Baby Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi.

When the four Mario brothers (Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi) first arrived on Yoshi's Island, the place was deserted. Most of the Yoshis had already been eaten. The few survivors were hiding in a small tree hut. Unfortunately, the Yoshi hideout was discovered by the massive creature. The Yoshis attempted to flee, but ultimately every last one was eaten by the massive monster. Even Yoshi, who attempted to fight the massive monster, was eaten by Yoob. Fortunately, the Mario brothers survived the attack. With no more Yoshis left in the area, Yoob left to search for more food.
Once inside Yoob's Belly, the group (except Baby Bowser) helps some of the previously swallowed Yoshis move forward in Yoob's stomach by pushing a Chomp Rock, which clears a path that lets them walk through Yoob's intestines. They then discover that part of Yoob's Belly is a factory for trapping Yoshis. The factory, maintained by RC Shroobers, stores Yoshis in eggs, then places them on a conveyor belt that takes them to Sunnycide. The group helps the Yoshis push the Chomp Rock away, then find Toadbert, who has forgotten everything that happened after he traveled back in time, but is still taking care of some trapped Yoshis. Toadbert tells them that Sunnycide is guarding the exit, and they go to confront it. Sunnycide uses the eggs in battle, and likewise, the heroes can free the Yoshis by breaking the eggs. Eventually, they defeat Sunnycide, and everyone, including the Yoshis, Toadbert, and Baby Bowser, escapes Yoob through the digestive tract, while Yoob seems to stop functioning altogether.

Later, while climbing a cliff on during its food search, Yoob was blasted with an energy beam from a Shroob UFO. The beam caused Yoob to grow to gigantic proportions. Yoob, who was originally about ten times bigger than Mario, was now over a hundred times bigger than the heroic plumber. In fact, Mario was now smaller than one of Yoob's eyes. With an enormous appetite to fit his new body, Yoob climbed the cliff and ate the four Mario brothers and Baby Bowser (who were previously battling for control of the Cobalt Star shards).
If Mario and Luigi return to Yoshi's Island, they can find Yoob's inactive body still on the cliffside. They are able to re-enter Yoob as they wish, though they must exit through the digestive tract again.

Once inside, the brothers discovered that Yoob's stomach was not a normal digestive system. In fact, the monster's stomach had been transformed into a bio-mechanical factory by the Shroobs themselves. The purpose of the factory was to create even more Yoobs, which could then be released against the Mushroom Kingdom. After Yoob ate a Yoshi, the dinosaur would be brought to the internal factory and tortured by RC Shroobers. Then, the Yoshi would be encased in a pink and green egg, similar to the one Yoob emerged from. In time, the eggs would hatch and another Yoob monster would be born.
Although Yoob's first cutscene where he spits out both Kylie Koopa and Kamek seems to imply that he doesn't like Koopas and only intends to eat the Yoshis, this is contradicted a few times afterward. He has no issue eating Baby Bowser and the Mario Bros. after turning giant, and the Dry Bones that are found in his belly imply that he did in fact eat some Koopa Troopas off-screen. There are also various bones, including ribcages, scattered on the floor, as well as much larger bones and skulls surrounding doorways in his belly, suggesting he ate other creatures off-screen as well.

Thankfully, the four Mario brothers put an end to this vile operation. To do so, the brothers aided a group of Yoshis (led by Yoshi himself) in their efforts to escape Yoob's body. By using Chomp Rocks that Yoob had eaten, the Yoshis managed to push the rolling stones through Yoob's intestines, creating a pathway for the Mario brothers to the heart of the internal factory. In the center of Yoob's stomach, the Mario brothers encountered the guardian of the Yoob eggs, Sunnycide. Sunnycide was created by the Shroobs to protect the eggs until they reached maturation and hatched into Yoobs. After a long battle, the brothers defeated Sunnycide, and, with the help of a Toad named Toadbert, freed the remaining trapped Yoshis. Escaping through Yoob's digestive tract, the Marios, Yoshis, Toadbert (and even Baby Bowser) made it back safely of Yoshi's Island. Yoob, who needed the energy provided by the Yoob eggs to remain operational, deactivated. Fortunately, all the captured Yoshis were saved before they turned into more Yoobs.

In the Super Mario-kun, Yoob appears in volume 36. Unlike in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Yoob originally was just a giant, carefree, friendly Yoshi who is gluttonous. He is used as a vessel for Sunnycide, as Sunnycide takes control of the giant Yoshi and turns him into a Yoob. After the brothers get eaten, they defeat Sunnycide inside, which reverts the Yoob to his normal state. The giant Yoshi then eats the Cobalt Star Shards, which causes the brothers to panic, and ends the chapter. They manage to get the shards out of him.

If Mario and Luigi return to Yoshi's Island, they can find Yoob's lifeless body attached to the side of a cliff. In fact, the Mario brothers can actually reenter Yoob's body to find items, badges, and beans the heroes may have missed during their first time through. Since Yoob's body is deactivated, the brothers don't need to worry about being digested.

Physical appearance
Yoob resembles a magenta Yoshi, except he is much larger and fatter (and gets even bigger when the Shroobs zap him), has black spines, a black saddle, blue shoes, a green underbelly, black irises, red pupils, and pincers for hands. Yoob bears a loose resemblance to barney, the host of the educational children's programs barney and barney. As a matter of fact, a Nintendo Power issue predating the release of Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time mentioned the similarities in a pre-release screenshot of the game.ref needed

It is unknown if the original Yoob started out as a normal Yoshi that was then encased in a Yoob egg, or if Yoob began as a unique genetic experiment created by the Shroobs.

When Yoob hatches from the egg, he begins to eat all of the Yoshis in the surrounding village.

History[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]

Yoob attacking Yoshi's Island
Yoob appears in the Yoshi village.

If Mario and Luigi return to Yoshi's Island, they can find Yoob's inactive body still on the cliffside. They are able to re-enter Yoob as they wish, though they must exit through the digestive tract again.

Trivia[edit]

 • When the babies dig underground or attack with the hammer inside Yoob's Belly, Yoob can be seen wincing in pain on the top screen. He also does this when the babies open an area in his belly by hammering buttons and when the Yoshis roll the Chomp Rock down his stomach, creating a path through his insides. This stops after Sunnycide is defeated.
 • In the original version of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, an enemy named Fawful Guy has an attack where it is eaten and turned into a discolored Yoshi egg by an off-screen creature, whose roar is identical to Yoob's.
