- Not to be confused with candle.
Lanterns (also referred to as torches[1][2][3][4][5] or candlesticks[6]) are recurring objects in the 3D Super Mario games. Lighting lanterns with fireballs can open pathways or make collectible items appear. Their function is shared with the Torches in the series The Legend of Zelda, something that is lampshaded in World 5-2 of Super Mario 3D Land.
In nearly all appearances, the player character lights lanterns in their Fire form. Levels that feature lanterns almost always include Fire Flowers. Like with lava and other forms of fire, touching a lantern's flame burns the character, even if they were the one who lit it.
History[edit]
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[edit]
Torches appear in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its 3DS remake. They can only be activated by Mario's Firebrand. Torches act as a counterpart to conductors, which react the same way to Luigi's Thunderhand. Like conductors, Torches are often used to seal doors. However, unlike conductors, Torches are also used in a few puzzles, such as being used to boil the cauldrons in Joke's End or needing to be lit in sequence on the Seabed.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
In Mario & Luigi: Brothership, there are areas that have torches that must be lit using fireballs. Some torches, like those found on Wayaway Island or The Soli-Tree, can be carried to different stations.
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
Torches in Yoshi's Island DS are found along the walls of various courses. Yoshi can eat a lit torch which allows him to blow fire three times. The fire can be used to light unlit torches, further lighting up the room. When Yoshi has Baby Bowser on his back, he can use Baby Bowser's fire-breathing ability to light the torches.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
Torches[2] are introduced late into Super Paper Mario, found along the walls of Underwhere Road. Bowser can light one to temporarily remove the darkness from obscuring the area. A set of white torches are also found within Castle Bleck, and must be lit in a pattern matching torches from another area to reveal a staircase. Torches will extinguish after a set amount of time and do not harm the player character in this game.
Super Mario series[edit]
This section needs Super Mario improvement. Specifically:
- Clarify the different types of lanterns
Requested improvements must be clear, pertinent, and well-formed. Please refrain from adding bullet points such as "Add more information" or "Write the rest of the article".
Super Mario Galaxy / Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Torches[3] return in Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port. They typically bear red flames, but in some ghost-themed galaxies, their flames are blue. In missions featuring the Fire Flower, lighting all of the torches in an area triggers a nearby event, such as in the opening of a stone gate in "The Underground Ghost Ship." Torches otherwise can be encountered already lit. The flames can be put out by a spin, typically giving a coin afterward. They have the same function in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
In Super Mario 3D Land, lighting torches usually reveals coins. Exclusively in World 5-2, lighting all four of the torches in one specific area causes the "Puzzle Solved Jingle" from the series The Legend of Zelda to play while a door that leads to the level's second Star Medal opens.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
In Super Mario 3D World and its port, lighting torches[5] can brighten up dark areas such as in Switchblack Ruins, and reveal Green Stars as seen in Piranha Creeper Creek after Dark, where every torch in each room must be lit to get them.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Lanterns appear in nearly every kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey, exhibiting designs that compliment the visited area's culture and geography. Typically, lanterns are always lit. They can be extinguished with a Cap Throw, by striking them with a Pokio's beak, or with Yoshi's tongue. A lantern often releases a coin or a Life-Up Heart when its flame is put out. Lanterns are the only source of light around Pitchblack Mountain in New Donk City.
In Shiveria Town, a location in the Snow Kingdom, four candlesticks encircle the entrance to Snowline Circuit. During "The Cake Thief's Parting Gift", the candlesticks are unlit and the entrance is blocked by four barriers. When Mario collects each Power Moon for the objective, all found in areas accessible from Shiveria Town, the corresponding candlestick becomes lit and the corresponding barrier is removed. The candlesticks relight themselves if they are extinguished.
In the Luncheon Kingdom, lighting specific lanterns awards Mario Power Moons. Traditional power-ups do not appear in Super Mario Odyssey, so in lieu of Fire Flowers, Mario must capture Fire Bros, Fire Piranha Plants, and Lava Bubbles to light the lanterns. Five different objectives in the Luncheon Kingdom require lighting lanterns. A similar objective involving a campfire is in the Wooded Kingdom.
