The piroetta is a modified version of jumping performed by Invincible Mario in Super Mario Bros. 3, replacing normal jumps and several variations of them. These somersaults improve the speed and range of jumping.
History[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
In Super Mario Bros. 3, Invincible characters perform the piroetta whenever they jump. Being in Small or Frog form prevents somersaulting, as does holding items. When in Hammer form, they duck into the shell, similar to that form's crouch animation. The move improves jumping ability, but makes it much more difficult to enter upward pipes due to the increased speed and altered hitboxes.
New Super Mario Bros. series[edit]
The somersault returns in New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. 2, but has been folded into Invincible Mario's increased overall movement speed that was introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Small Mario is no longer prevented from somersaulting. It no longer hinders the ability to enter upward pipes. Variations of jumping, such as a Wall Jump, are also replaced by the piroetta.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. U are similar, but these games also include Spin Jumping and Midair Spins. Spin Jumps are not replaced by the piroetta. Midair Spins do not have their animation while somersaulting but using one still generates its sound effect and slows Mario's falling.
3D Super Mario games[edit]
The piroetta makes its 3D debut in Super Mario Galaxy and reappears in Super Mario Galaxy 2, where it is instead performed by Rainbow Mario in place of normal jumps. Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World also have the move for Invincible Mario. In all cases, it acts similarly to previous games.
Super Mario Maker series[edit]
In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS and Super Mario Maker 2, the piroetta can be performed in the Super Mario Bros. 3, New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario 3D World game styles, with almost all mechanics being inherited from the source games. The Super Mario Bros. 3 game style is based on the physics of New Super Mario Bros. U, removing all issues with entering upward pipes. Further, jumping while dashing with a full P-Meter is not replaced by the piroetta.
