Platforms in the Super Mario franchise are physical objects that the player character must traverse or jump across to get through levels or discover secrets. Platforms are seen throughout the Super Mario franchise, and they serve as the primary terrain the player interacts with. Platforms come in many different forms and have a wide variety of functions across the franchise.
Platforms serve as ground for the player, with most serving as the floor, while some float in the air. Some platforms (mostly, though not exclusively, in two-dimensional games) can be jumped up through from below. Other platforms feature interactive elements, such as various forms of lifts that move around, or platforms that require hitting a block or using an item to make them tangible.
In addition to standard platforms, which are objects that are specifically made for traversal, there are many non-platform objects in the Super Mario franchise that can be stood on or jumped across in specific contexts. Most blocks, like platforms, can be stood on top of, and some blocks, such as the Cloud Block, Hard Block, or unbreakable block, are frequently used as a form of platform though are still considered blocks. In addition, some entities or enemies can be stood on top of like a platform, such as the Para-Beetle or Mega Mole, while not being platforms themselves.
