Moon Coin

Moon Coins are a type of coin appearing only in World Star of New Super Mario Bros. 2. They are like Star Coins, but they have 3-Up Moons imprinted on them. Despite playing a similar role, Moon Coins cannot be used in the way Star Coins can, meaning that they cannot be used to remove Star Coin Signs; collecting Moon Coins is required only to obtain a star icon on the player's profile, although collecting them all permanently opens every Toad House.

Moon Coins also appear in Mario Golf: World Tour, where they can be obtained by the player by accomplishing challenges that are harder than their Star Coin versions. In Moon Coin challenges, the coins and rings are placed in trickier positions, the characters to challenge in match plays have leveled up, the wind is stronger, and back tees are used.
