Cat o' 9 tails are fairly rare enemies, encountered in only three levels in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (namely Mudhole Marsh, Screech's Sprint, and Fiery Furnace). If a Cat o' 9 tails spots either Diddy Kong or Dixie Kong, it will attempt to spin into them and whip them with its tails. The Kongs must avoid this attack and wait for a Cat o' 9 tails to collapse from dizziness; it will then become vulnerable to being jumped on the head.
Cat o' 9 tails are uncommon enemies and only appear in three levels: Mudhole Marsh, Screech's Sprint, and Fiery Furnace. If a Cat o' 9 tails notices Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong, it starts to rapidly twirl and move around, attempting to whip both Kongs with its tails. Cat o' 9 tails are invulnerable to attack while they spin around, and after a while the Cat o' 9 tails collapses from dizziness. During this phase, the Kongs can defeat the Cat o' 9 tails by jumping on its head.

If the Kongs jump into a Cat o' 9 tails from above while it is spinning, they will end up being flung into the air. This can help them collect items, although they can be thrown into another enemy or abyss. Also, while Cat o' 9 tails is spinning, cartwheels and spins are useless against it.
The Kongs must generally avoid a Cat o' 9 tails while it spins around, otherwise they are caught in its tails, and the Cat o' 9 tails flings them up into the air. While this can help the Kongs collect items, they may also get thrown into another enemy or abyss.
