Spike Tops are similar to Buzzy Beetles, except their shells are red and have a single spike projecting out of the top, making them impossible to be jumped upon, while still being resistant to fire. They crawl around walls in Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros., and Super Princess Peach. They are also one of the few enemies in Super Princess Peach resistant to Perry. They can only be destroyed by a Shell or Starman in Super Mario World, a Shell, Starman, or Mega Mushroom in New Super Mario Bros., or Rage or Poundbrella in Super Princess Peach. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they can be defeated by a Starman, Shell, hitting a block from below with the Spike Top on top of the block or Ground Pounding the block with the Spike Top on the bottom.

In Paper Mario, Spike Tops appear as enemies in Mt. Lavalava. In the sequel, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door they are blue, with Red Spike Tops appearing as a sub-species. Blue-shelled Spike Tops make a reappearance in Super Paper Mario.

Fire Mario runs under several Spike Tops in a level in New Super Mario Bros.
Several Spike Tops in 5-2 in New Super Mario Bros.

Super Princess Peach refers to the Spike Top as the Mecha-Spike Top. Despite this name, the Spike Tops of Super Princess Peach look no different than Spike Tops of other games, and therefore do not appear to be mechanical. Super Princess Peach also introduces an angry variety, the Mad Mecha-Spike Top, which can stretch out its spike to attack foes. They also appear in New Super Mario Bros.Wii, mostly in World 2-3.
