Silver Coins are coin items in Diddy Kong Racing and its Nintendo DS version.
History[edit]
Diddy Kong Racing[edit]
In the original Nintendo 64 release, the Silver Coins have a colorful N64 icon designed on the sides, making them resemble the Nintendo Coin from Donkey Kong 64. Every course has a Silver Coin Challenge, where the objective is to collect eight Silver Coins and win in first place. Many of them are well hidden or located off-track. The player can only participate in a world's Silver Coin Challenges after winning against the world boss in a race, and every race course has their own minimum requirement of Golden Balloons needed to play the challenges. When the player's racer completes a Silver Coin Challenge, Taj awards them with a Golden Balloon. Completing the Silver Coin Challenge in all four courses of Dino Domain, Snowflake Mountain, Sherbet Island and Dragon Forest engages the player in a rematch against the world's boss to obtain a piece of the Wizpig amulet, and obtaining all four pieces leads up to a race with Wizpig himself. In Future Fun Land, completing the Silver Coin Challenge, plus obtaining all four pieces of the T.T. amulet, engages the player in one more race with Wizpig.
Diddy Kong Racing DS[edit]
In the remake, the Silver Coin Challenge has been replaced with Balloon Touch Challenges in Adventure Mode. The Silver Coin Challenges still exist in the single race mode, and are redesigned with a Rare symbol on the sides like the game's standard coins in other modes. They can be purchased from Taj's Wishes Menu. Each track's Silver Coin Challenge must be unlocked by completing its respective Balloon Touch Challenge.
Unused appearances[edit]
Diddy Kong Pilot (2003)[edit]
In the unpublished 2003 build of Diddy Kong Pilot, Silver Coins are simply referred to as coins and have a banana mark, but function virtually the same. They appear in the Cranky Challenge, where all six coins must be collected while winning in a one-on-one race against Cranky on one of the normal courses.
In the finalized Banjo-Pilot release, they are replaced with Jiggies; they are now used to construct bonus images, the challenge itself can be completed with just one collected, and the reversed tracks also have a challenge rather than just the normal ones.
