If [[Mario]] bops a Splunkin once, it will crack a bit and will increase its speed. Another bop will make it explode, defeating it and earning points. The Splunkin is a relatively small and harmless enemy, though they are sometimes found in larger groups. Their name is a pun on the word "Spelunking".    


[[Jack O' Goomba]]s highly resemble Splunkins. Splunkins behave just like [[Rex]]es, [[Wiggler]]s, and [[Morty Mole]]s as they move faster after being hit the first time.
Splunkins are one of the few enemies introduced in ''New Super Mario Bros.'' not to make subsequent appearances in the [[Super Mario (franchise)|''Super Mario'' franchise]]. Their English name is potentially a portmanteau of "spelunking" and "pumpkin."

Splunkins[1] are jack-o'-lantern enemies in New Super Mario Bros. Splunkins are encountered in World 3-Ghost House, World 5-Ghost House, World 7-Ghost House, and World 8-1. They walk along the ground like Goombas. When Splunkins are stomped, the cracks on their bodies deepen and they walk faster. Stomping one a second time defeats the Splunkin. Ground-pounding Splunkins or striking them with fireballs defeats them in one hit.

Splunkins are one of the few enemies introduced in New Super Mario Bros. not to make subsequent appearances in the Super Mario franchise. Their English name is potentially a portmanteau of "spelunking" and "pumpkin."
