Corkscrew (Super Smash Bros. series)
Corkscrew is Wario's up special move in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It has Wario jump up while spinning, repeatedly hitting opponents to drag them upward with him. It ends by launching all nearby opponents, including those carried up by the attack's earlier portion. It is loosely similar to Mario Tornado, Luigi Cyclone, and Dr. Tornado. Unlike them Corkscrew always rises, cannot freely move to the left or right, and it causes Wario to fall helplessly after using it.
History[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
Corkscrew is introduced in this game. Wario performs it by holding his hands upward with open palms. By default, Corkscrew only goes directly upward, but before Wario starts the jump the trajectory of the jump can be slightly angled to the left or right with a corresponding control stick
input. When Corkscrew ends without being cancelled by grabbing an edge of the stage, Wario begins falling helplessly. Corresponding with the attack, Wario's animation for falling helplessly has him slowly spin around in a sitting position. If Wario is Wario-Man, Corkscrew has an electric effect.
When Corkscrew is started on the ground it creates a blue energy effect for Wario leaping. In the air, it instead has a pale energy effect.
While Corkscrew can deal a significant amount of damage, the attack is not rewarding enough to be worth the risk falling helplessly creates, so players usually only use Corkscrew in order to recover.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]
Corkscrew's animation is changed in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. The start of the move creates a blue and yellow energy effect for Wario leaping regardless of if Wario is on the ground or in the air. During the jump, Wario has his arms outstretched to his sides and his hands are clenched into fists. For the final hit, Wario opens his hands and splays his fingers.
Corkscrew has two custom variants: Widescrew and Corkscrew Leap. Widescrew increases the amount the jump's angle can be changed, to the point it can be aimed just above a horizontal line, but it deals less damage and reduces the distance of the jump even when using the default angle. Corkscrew Leap increases the distance the attack covers, making it better for recovering, but it takes longer to start the jump and it does not do any damage.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
Corkscrew returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As most characters do not have special move customization, Widescrew and Corkscrew Leap do not return. Additionally, since Wario-Man is not a fully controllable character in this game, there is no longer an alternative electrical Corkscrew.
