Corkscrew (Super Smash Bros. series)
Corkscrew is Wario's up special move in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It is loosely similar to the Spin in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Corkscrew has Wario jump upward while spinning, with his arms outstretched and his hands clenched into fists. By default, Corkscrew only goes directly upward, but before Wario starts the jump the trajectory of the jump can be slightly angled to the left or right with a corresponding control stick input. Opponents caught in the spinning jump are hit multiple times and get carried along with Wario. At the end, Wario opens his hands and splays his fingers, launching anyone he hits, including those carried up by the earlier portion of the attack. When Corkscrew ends without being cancelled by grabbing an edge of the stage, Wario begins falling helplessly. Corresponding with the attack, Wario's animation for falling helplessly has him slowly spin around in a sitting position.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, if Wario is Wario-Man, Corkscrew has an electric effect.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, when Corkscrew is started on the ground it creates a blue energy effect for Wario leaping. In the air, it instead has a pale energy effect. In all later games, Corkscrew creates a blue and yellow energy effect for Wario leaping regardless of if Wario is on the ground or in the air.
While Corkscrew can deal a significant amount of damage, the attack is not rewarding enough to be worth the risk falling helplessly creates, so players usually only use Corkscrew in order to recover.
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Corkscrew has one of two custom variants: Widescrew and Corkscrew Leap. Widescrew increases the amount the jump's angle can be changed, to the point it can be aimed just above a horizontal line, but it deals less damage and reduces the distance of the jump even when using the default angle. Corkscrew Leap increases the distance the attack covers, making it better for recovering, but it takes longer to start the jump and it does not do any damage.
