Cool Kongs used to wear spiked helmets, have purple goggles, be darker, and have the "C" on their ties being a "W." The sprite used for the Mini Marios hanging onto a Cool Kong's tie was also different, with the Mini Marios facing forward as he did so.

Hearts were also present instead of big coins (apparently as collectible items).

Shy Guys were dark red instead of red-pink in the final game.

Wall Jump bars were also originally red, being reddish-pink (much as Shy Guys) in the final game. Falling poses were the same has unactivated poses as well.

Additionally, Gold Mini Marios were going to appear in every level.

The background music was altered. Additionally, there was no time limit. Mushroom Mayhem was named Mushroom Kingdom. Also, a map was available by pressing "Select".

The game logo was slightly different from the final.

E3 2006 demo build[edit]

A demo for the game was available to be played at E3 2006, which contained many differences from the final build of the game:

 • Mushroom Mayhem is named Mushroom Kingdom.
 • A larger quantity of level statistics are displayed on the top screen, such as the Chain Bonus, Nonstop Bonus, Time Bonus, and the level's high score.
 • Cool Kongs wear spiked helmets, have purple goggles, are darker in color, and have the letter "W" on their ties instead of "C". The sprite used for the Mini Marios hanging onto a Cool Kong's tie is also different, with a Mini Mario facing forward as it does so.
 • Mini Mario Cards play the same sound effect as a coin when collected.
 • Hearts appear as collectable items in some levels, often where Large Coins appear in the final game. When collected, they add 2,000 points to the score and play the same sound effect that Mini Mario Cards play in the final game.
 • Shy Guys are dark red instead of red-pink in the final game.
 • Wall Jump Bars are also red, being reddish-pink (similar to Shy Guys) in the final game. The Mini Marios' poses as they slid down a Wall Jump Bar are the same as their unactivated poses.
 • Spikes are larger and use a blue base instead of a red one.[1]
 • Gold Mini Marios were going to appear in every level.
 • The background music uses different instruments than the final game.
 • A map of the level can be viewed by pressing Select Button. This feature was eventually used in Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!.
 • When a Mini Mario is destroyed, it says "Mama mia..." instead of playing a sound effect of a toy breaking.
 • The game logo was slightly different from the final version.

DS Download Station: Volume 3 demo build[edit]

Following the preview of the game at E3 2006, a demo of the game was broadcast at stores through the DS Download Station: Volume 3 cartridge.[2] This demo allows the first six levels in Mushroom Kingdom to be played; after Room 1-6 is completed, a "Thank You for Playing" screen is displayed. However, the demo also contains the remaining three non-boss levels on the floor, which can be accessed by modifying the game's code. The demo features many of the differences present in the E3 2006 build.
