"Joel McHale Goes Viral for Nintendo" is a video released on Nintendo of America's YouTube channel to promote the Nintendo 3DS. The video features American actor and comedian, Joel McHale.
Synopsis[edit]
After Joel McHale plays Mario Kart 7, he closes his Nintendo 3DS and asks the Nintendo employee next to him what he wants. The employee says he and everyone at Nintendo are excited to have him join the Nintendo 3DS campaign. Joel says if he is making a commercial, he does not want it to feel like a commercial and that it has to go viral. Joel asks the employee if he brought a baby panda, to which the employee states they tried to obtain one, but they are endangered. Joel says he needs the panda because he was going to sit it down, make it sneeze, and expect it to get 40,000,000 YouTube hits. Whatever Nintendo shoots for a commercial, Joel says he wants the commercial to feel "organic", "homegrown", "raw", and "real". Two women enter the room with a hair dryer and makeup. The employee asks Joel if he wants the commercial to be viral, why he is having the women get his hair and makeup done for him. Joel insults the employee and says the women are his friends who just so happen to be hair and makeup artists. Joel compares this situation to if the employee had a friend who is a masseuse who noticed a kink in their shoulder. Since their friend is a masseuse, they would work it out for them because they care. After Joel tells the employee to "scram", the employee tells his idea to Joel: they shoot a normal conference room scene with Nintendo logos and products everywhere. The employee likes this idea because he finds it humorous how obvious the commercial is. Joel points at the Nintendo 3DS logo and tells the employee to shut up. Joel says if they did that, the audience would lose trust. Joel then introduces the employee to Tyler, an intern who goes to Stanford. Tyler kicks Tyler in the crotch, causing him to fall to the ground. The employee asks Joel why he did that, to which Joel says he assumes he does not know about the viral video industry and that if they uploaded his action to YouTube, it would get 40,000,000 hits by nightfall. Joel then states it is hard to make a commercial that does not look like a commercial, and compares it to trying to convey how the Nintendo 3DSes' 3D vision screen works, which he inadvertently explains. The employee tries to speak to Joel, but he shushes him and states he knows what he is thinking and assumes he is wondering if it comes with a variety of colors. The employee looks confused as Joel lists out the colors flame red, aqua blue, cosmo black, and pearl pink, the latter of which is Joel's favorite. The employee is amazed by the amount of "models". Joel prompts him to turn around, revealing four models wearing bikinis in the aforementioned colors.
Joel assumes he did the employees job, stating "hot women" can sell anything. Joel interrupts the employee again and believes he is thinking they are being too subtle, which Joel thinks is a good thing. After explaining the Nintendo 3DSes' features, he slaps the employee in the face and asks if he would like to do spitballing with his writers, who are revealed to be Mario and Luigi. Joel assumes the employee is being mean to the brothers and calls him racist, which the employee confirms, admitting they have done a lot and deserve more respect from him. Joel continues to describe the 3DSes' features as the women in pearl pink and aqua blue put a ribbon reading "Mushroom King" and a hat resembling Toad's head on him. The employee realizes that what Joel is doing could be the commercial they were talking about. Joel grabs the employee's shirt and asks him what is funny about it and states he is not a sellout. Everyone says "Buy a Nintendo 3DS now!" before the Super Mario 3D Land rendition of "Player Down" is heard. The video ends with Mario and Luigi accidentally running into a clear window.
