Variant of Cannon

Gun barrels,[1][2] each described as a "gun's barrel,"[3] also referred to as turrets[4][5] or tank barrels,[6] are small horizontal turrets fastened to tanks and vessels in Dark Land in Super Mario Bros. 3. They occur in the first tank course and second tank course. They are invocative of black pipes of various lengths, and they are attached to the left side of most tanks in these levels. Gun barrels fire cannonballs that travel straight to the left. Gun barrels have the same cannonball speed and firing rate as the diagonal cannons, which also appear in the same levels. Also like these cannons, gun barrels cannot be destroyed or disabled.

In the Super Mario Maker series, horizontal-facing cannons have a similar function, similar to horizontal giant cannons.

Naming[edit]

The Japanese release of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia recognizes gun barrels as the "normal" cannons in Super Mario Bros. 3, whereas the diagonal mortars that would characterize most enemy cannons in future 2D games are recognized as「斜め砲台」(Naname Hōdai, "diagonal artillery") in this game.[7]
