Cards appear in Super Mario Bros. 3 as collectibles found at a goal. The player acquires one out of a roulette every time a level is cleared; the pictures depicted are Mushrooms, Flowers, and Stars. Once three cards are collected, the player is given a 1-Up prize: one if they do not match, two if they are Mushrooms, three if they are Flowers, and five if they are Stars.
Cards can also be obtained via the 2 Player Game, specifically upon initiating the Mario Bros.-styled battle mode. Hitting the other player from the floor below like an enemy, stomping on them, or using the POW Block while they are on a floor shakes a card out of them, and it proceeds to bounce around until it is reclaimed, stolen, or lost.
