- “Do you remember the security guard's younger brother? Well, he got himself a security job at the Anglerfish Restaurant. But... Well... He takes it too seriously. No one can get into the restaurant now!”
- —Leyden's assistant, Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Guardian Spirit is a side quest in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. In this quest, Mario and Luigi must answer a quiz from the security guard's younger brother in order to get into the Anglerfish Restaurant on Bulbfish Island.
Guardian Spirit becomes available after linking Heatfreeze Island and expires after the second visit to Fortress Zokket. Clearing the side quest awards two Ultra Mushrooms and three Super Nuts.
Side questEdit
To start the side quest, Mario and Luigi must speak to Leyden's assistant on Bulbfish Island, located outside of his father's home. He tells the Bros. that the younger brother of the security guard has found a job guarding the Anglerfish Restaurant, and nobody can get inside because he takes his job too seriously. Leyden's assistant requests the brothers to find a way to get past the guard. When Mario and Luigi speak with the younger brother, he tells them he is keeping all of the weirdos out, whether they are residents or outsiders. Snoutlet tries to explain that the restaurant workers want people to enjoy their food, but the guard does not listen. He then tasks Mario and Luigi to pass his quiz to gain his trust. The quiz has three questions, and all of them must be answered correctly. The younger brother only tells how many questions were answered correctly after the quiz. Successfully passing the quiz will surprise him, and he calls himself a failure. Snoutlet then tells the younger brother that the point of a restaurant is for everyone to enjoy the food served there. Realizing his mistake, the younger brother thanks Mario and Luigi and gives them their reward. He then tells them to enjoy the tasty Bulbfish dishes and runs inside the restaurant. The side quest is then complete.
If the side quest is cleared, the younger brother appears on Shipshape Island right before Mario and Luigi enter the Soli-Tree, and is joined by his older brother after Reclusa is defeated. They both vow to protect Concordia with justice.

Gossips' dialogueEdit
The following quotes are from the gossips if they are spoken to while the side quest is available.
- Yellow gossip: "Looks like the security guard on Bulbfish Island was hit with the you-know-what."
- Pink gossip: "That anti-people plague that's going around, yeah?"
- Blue gossip: "That's going to make guarding the island a much tougher job."
- Yellow gossip: "About that—his younger brother is working as a temporary replacement."
- Pink gossip: "That's got me worried. I wonder if he can do as well as his big brother."
- Yellow gossip: "Actually he's a bit too enthusiastic, I hear. He's way more strict than he needs to be! He's so serious about his job that he won't even let Leyden or his assistant past him!"
- Pink gossip: "Sounds like someone might want to straighten him out just a tad."
- Blue gossip: "We'd be fantastic security guards, right, dears? The gift of gab would serve us well in that job! You wanna get past us? We've got about 19 million tough questions for you to answer first!"
- All three: "Oh, goodness! Ohohohohoho!"
If the player speaks to them again, the above conversation is skipped and only one line of dialogue is said.
- "Sounds like the security guard on Bulbfish Island has been hit by the anti-people plague."
