The following tables are used in Mario Kart Wii to determine the probability of receiving an item when an Item Box is opened. Like in Mario Kart DS, only the tables for the default case are stored in the game's files; in Mario Kart Wii, it is known as the "Balanced" case. The probability is coded as percentage multiplied by two. The distributions are presented in the order used in the code.[1]

Races

In the races, the item probability distributions are chosen depending on the rank of the driver when the Item Box is opened.

Special cases

These distributions are used in special cases. For example, the 12th distribution is used for the special item boxes in Chain Chomp Wheel. The last four distributions do not allow to obtain any item, it's unclear whether they are actually used or not.

Battles

In the battles, the distribution is chosen depending on how many points behind the driver is with respect to the driver with the most point of the opposite team when the item box is opened.[2]
