“My word! What's this? Some sort of inky shadow has been left on my page... What do you suppose this is, exactly?”
Mr. E

The shadow, described by Mr. E as an "inky shadow", is a creature that occasionally appears in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. The shadow may sometimes appear within Mr. E's pages, often incentivizing the player to check for a specific unobtained discovery of the creature it points to. When its highlighted discovery is completed, it will reward large tokens to the player.

Overview

A shadow can appear on top of unobtained discoveries, often urging Yoshi to check for the discovery.
“That shadow scurried away after you collected its tokens... Were they meant to celebrate our discovery? We'll likely spot that inky shadow nudging us toward more pending discoveries later on.”
Mr. E

The shadow can appear on the chapters list, which causes Mr. E to urge Yoshi to check it out. It will jump into the chapter it is highlighting, and appear as a speech bubble on top of a random creature with an unobtained discovery. By going to that creature's discoveries list, the player may find the shadow dancing on top of a currently unobtained discovery, and can select it to try obtaining the discovery.

When entering a habitat this way, the shadow may appear dancing on the loading screen. Afterwards, Yoshi can explore the habitat normally, but must try to obtain the discovery in question. Once the target discovery has been obtained, the discovery will be written to an open space in the habitat, and the shadow will manifest around the discovery itself, holding three large tokens (equivalent to 30 tokens total) as a reward.

After Yoshi heads towards the shadow and collects the tokens it rewards, it will disappear with a splat animation. Mr. E speculates if what the creature rewarded was meant to be celebrating a discovery being obtained. The shadow may occasionally appear again on another creature with any unobtained discoveries later on, however it will not appear again overall if the player has obtained all discoveries in the game.

As this is a creature not listed in the index, the shadow is only referred to as such through Mr. E's dialogue and when highlighting a discovery with a shadow on it. The creature's name uses sentence-case when referred to in in-game text.
