Autoscroll is a type of level in various platforming titles. Rather than the player controlling progress made through the level, it is done through automatic camera movement, forcing players to proceed through the level at the pace of the camera. A significant hazard of an autoscrolling level is that walls and other solid objects such as blocks can squish and cause players to lose a life if they are caught in between the edge of the screen and the object. It is prevalent in 2D titles; however, Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World, both more linear titles compared to their other counterparts, feature some 3D levels that autoscroll. Some levels are entirely autoscrollers while other levels feature only portions that are autoscrolling.
Levels that force a player to move due to a deadly hazard trailing them such as the poison fog in World 8-1 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii or the Fuzzy Horde from Super Mario 3D World do not constitute as an autoscrolling level, as players still have control over camera movement. The same applies to levels where players need to ride an object such as boats or creatures to progress through it.
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario Bros. 3
World 1-4 is the first autoscrolling level in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its Game Boy Advance remake, making it the first autoscrolling level in the Super Mario series. It is an athletic-type level notable for featuring moving platforms that fall into a pit when stepped on.
Super Mario Bros. 3 also introduces airship levels that become recurring throughout the rest of the series, and those are typically autoscrolling either entirely or in segments. Airship levels that contain autoscrolling of some kind include World 1- Airship, World 5- Airship, World 7- Airship
World 6-2 World 6-7 takes place in Ice Land and is a diagonally autoscrolling level that takes place with few platforms in the sky. It also features Ice Blocks and Donut Lifts.
The two tank levels in Dark Land, World 8- Tank and World 8- Tank are both horizontally scrolling levels where players have to overcome massive moving tank obstacles. The player does not move, but the tanks move, having similar mechanics to other autoscrolling levels.
Super Mario World
#1 Iggy's Castle from Super Mario World and its Game Boy Advance remake is the first level of the game that contains an autoscrolling area, where a massive brown pillar attempts to crush the player before the boss room. In fact, all of the pillar's appearances are in autoscrolling areas, which include the Forest Fortress and room 1 of Bowser's Castle. Donut Plains 2 is the first full level that autoscrolls. It is the first underground, cave level in the game, notable for its moving yellow sand tides that can either crush the player from above or below or from the sides due to the nature of the autoscrolling level.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Secret Course 3 is the secret level of Macro Zone in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It is an athletic-styled level consisting primarily of Empty Blocks and Flimsy Lifts.
Scenic Course is an optional level not affiliated with any Zone.
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Galaxy
While Super Mario Galaxy does not feature any true autoscrolling levels, Matter Splatter Mansion in Ghostly Galaxy and Matter Splatter Galaxy contain segments where matter creates and destroys platforms similar to a moving spotlight, acting in a similar manner to a traditional autoscrolling level.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
World 2- Castle is Roy Koopa's castle with with three-way corridors similar to the level gimmick of World 4-4 and World 7-4 from Super Mario Bros., except that it autoscrolls. When the correct path is chosen, the level autoscrolls faster to hurry players along.
World 8-7 was originally intended to be an autoscrolling level, but it was changed as the screen moved too fast for the Spine Coaster to keep up.[1]
Super Mario 3D Land
Super Mario 3D Land is the first 3D Mario platformer to feature autoscrolling levels, as it is based upon traditional mechanics of the 2D platformers found in Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros. than the collecathon, sandbox-style platforming of its contemporaries.
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Xiahou Ba comment: I didn't play this game, so more info, revision, and research may be required.
World Mushroom-2 is the second level of World Mushroom, which is an optional world that can be accessed by using the Warp Cannon in World 1- Warp Cannon. It is an underwater level that autoscrolls, which involves players avoiding Deep Cheeps and Urchins as they travel diagonally to the upper right parts. The second level that has autoscrolling in World Mushroom is World Mushroom-3, an underground level filled with sand, though only segments of this level autoscroll. Finally, the third autoscrolling level, World Mushroom-B, which is the second secret level of World Mushroom, is a sky-themed level composed of many Beanstalks and Koopa Troopas. World 3- Tower is an underwater level that is notable for being the only appearance of Spike Pillars in the game.

Beanstalk Jungle from New Super Luigi U
Super Mario 3D World
Tank levels in Super Mario 3D World such as Bowser's Bullet Bill Brigade and Bowser's Bob-omb Brigade, similar to the tank levels in Super Mario Bros. 3, are autoscrolling levels, and the former is the first autoscrolling level in the game. Tank levels involve players dodging massive moving tanks and squadrons of enemies such as Blocksteppers; these tanks come laden with hazards such as Spike Traps and Bullet Bills.
Super Mario Maker
Super Mario Maker features an autoscroll setting in Course Maker, accessed from the level timer. The autoscroll can be set between 3 different speeds, represented by a turtle, rabbit, and cheetah respectively in reference to Mario Paint.

These are the autoscrolling levels that appear in the Nintendo 3DS port of Super Mario Maker:
Super Mario Maker 2
Super Mario Maker 2 brings back the three autoscroll speed options from Super Mario Maker, now accessed from their own icon in the Course Maker. In addition, a fourth "Custom" option is introduced, which allows the creator to control the precise directions and speed the screen scrolls. Selecting the option enables the "Custom Scroll" mode, where up to 10 bird icons can be placed throughout the level, connected by arrowed lines indicating the way the camera will scroll between the points. Each icon can also be tapped to set it between three different speeds, which will affect how fast the camera moves between it and the next point. In the newly added vertical subareas, the turtle, rabbit, and cheetah icons are instead replaced with a hot air balloon, helicopter, and UFO respectively. Arrow buttons are also added to the Autoscroll menu, which changes whether the subarea scrolls up or down. "Autoscroll" is also one of several tags players can use to label their courses.
Several courses in Story Mode use autoscrolling. Below is the following:
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Musical Piranha Plant levels in Super Mario Bros. Wonder such as Piranha Plants on Parade and The Semifinal Test Piranha Plant Reprise contain autoscrolling; the former is the first autoscrolling level in the game and the second overall level in the game. The autoscrolling activates when players touch a Wonder Flower to activate the level's Wonder Effect, which turns the level into a musical flair.
Gnawsher Lair in the Petal Isles features Wonder Gnawshers that chase players in an autoscroll level. Deep Magma Bog Flying Battleship is an airship level in Deep Magma Bog.
Bonus: Coins Galore! is a bonus autoscrolling level dedicated to collecting coins and flower coins. The course appears after a Game Over and the first time The Final Battle! Bowser's Rage Stage is completed.
Yoshi series
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Hop! Hop! Donut Lifts is the first autoscrolling level in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its Game Boy Advance remake, introduced in World 1. It is Purple Yoshi's first level in the game. It is an athletic-type level that features sparse platforms, paddle wheels, and the eponymous Donut Blocks that fall when Purple Yoshi stands on them for too long. Poochy Ain't Stupid is an optional, Extra Stage in World 1 where players need to use Poochy to traverse a cave filled with lava; this is one of the few platforming levels that feature both a rideable creature and an autoscrolling level, though Poochy in this case can be controlled by the player.
Yoshi Topsy-Turvy
Various missions from Yoshi Topsy-Turvy are autoscrolling areas with a spinning spiked object on the left side of the screen.
Yoshi's Island DS
Yoshi's New Island
Hotfoot Hurdle is the only autoscrolling level in Yoshi's New Island, introduced late in the game at World 6. The level's playable Yoshi is the purple Yoshi, and the theme of the level is a lava-filled cave. A segment of the level does not autoscroll, but it uses a moving Flatbed Ferry to carry Purple Yoshi across lava.
Yoshi's Wooly World
Xiahou Ba comment: Never played Wooly World so I have to watch a video I guess.
Naval Piranha 2: Now It's Personal! has various autoscroll sections that speed up as the player traverses through the level.
Yoshi's Crafted World
Mario Party series
Various minigames across Mario Party titles feature the four players trying to survive an obstacle course, which are usually autoscrolling to accommodate for the four players. All three multiplayer Bowser minigames in Mario Party 7 involve players traversing through a long, autoscrolling obstacle course, trying to avoid being eliminated by hazards and various Koopa Kid attacks. These are Magmagical Journey!, Funderwall!, and Funstacle Course! Sick and Twisted from Mario Party 8 has players jumping across spinning platforms avoiding to get eliminated by aforementioned platforms collapsing and Bullet Bills as the screen autoscrolls. Skyjinks from Mario Party 9 has players moving similarly to a 3D autoscrolling platformer level. In Perspective Mode, however, the minigame does not autoscroll. Hop Till You Drop from Mario Party: Island Tour features players hopping across blocks on a conveyor belt, avoiding getting eliminated by falling through the gaps. The minigame additionally features a rearrangement of the Athletic BGM from Super Mario Bros. 3.

Super Smash Bros. series
Various stages from the Super Smash Bros. series behave as autoscrolling levels in platforming titles, and they are first introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Mario-related stages include Rainbow Cruise, a stage that references Rainbow Ride from Super Mario 64, where players first ride on a ship that crashes onto platforms, which turns the stage into an autoscrolling level. Mushroomy Kingdom from Super Smash Bros. Brawl replicates the layout of World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros., and an alternate version, World 1-2, can also be played exclusively in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Rumble Falls, based off Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, is an autoscrolling stage where players have to constantly travel upwards, where the stage speeds up the scrolling from time to time. 3D Land in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is a stage themed after Super Mario 3D Land that takes players across various levels from the game. Golden Plains only partially autoscrolls, where an Arrow Sign indicates where the screen moves to either the left or right part of the stage but the stage is otherwise static. All mentioned stages except Mushroomy Kingdom's World 1-2 and Rumble Falls reappear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
