Start Pipes[1] are a type of pipe introduced in LEGO Super Mario, as an integral part in the interactive elements of the theme. it consists of a 6×6 green base with a pipe structure built on top and a green tile containing an Action Tag placed inside. A Start Pipe (or a similar object) must always be scanned by an interactive LEGO Mario, Luigi or Peach figure in order to begin a level. When scanned, "Pipe Travel / Power-Down" is played to signify the start of the level, and a 60 seconds countdown starts on the interactive figure's chest. The player must then use the figure to collect as many coins as possible and reach the Goal Pole within the time.
"Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. plays while the timer is active. At 15 seconds remaining, the "Timer Warning" sound effect plays and the music speeds up. If the course is not completed in time, "Player Down" from Super Mario Bros. plays at the end of the timer and the player's coins are not saved.
A Start Pipe is included in each of the following sets:
- 71360 Adventures with Mario
- 71387 Adventures with Luigi
- 71403 Adventures with Peach
- 71439 Adventures with Interactive LEGO Mario
- 71440 Adventures with Interactive LEGO Luigi
- 71441 Adventures with Interactive LEGO Peach
The Action Tag for the Start Pipe is also included in set 72043 Interactive Lego Mario & Standard Kart, accompanied only by a grass-themed base and an arrow sign. It behaves exactly as a Start Pipe, including playing the pipe travel sound effect when scanned.
Variants[edit]
Other variants of the Start Pipe were introduced along with specific interactive sets in the LEGO Super Mario theme. Each type of Start Pipe has different rules, but all act interchangeable between each other, and any pipe can be used along with any set.
Special Pipe: Dash 30[edit]
The Special Pipe: Dash 30[2] is a variant of the Start Pipe which appears in set 71380 Master Your Adventure. It is a yellow Start Pipe with an icon depicting a clock with the number 30 on it. When scanned, it starts a count down of 30 seconds instead of 60. "Slider" plays while this timer is active, and there is no warning at the 15 seconds mark.
Special Pipe: Speed Run[edit]
The Special Pipe: Speed Run is a variant of the Start Pipe appearing in sets 71390 Reznor Knockdown and 71434 Soda Jungle Maker Set. It is another yellow Start Pipe, with an icon of a clock and three coins instead. When scanned, instead of a timer, the figure's screen displays a total of fifty coins. Every coin collected deducts from that amount, and the level ends once the total reaches zero. Then, the time it took to complete the level is displayed. This inverts the relationship between coins and time: Instead of collecting the most coins within a set amount of time, the player must collect a set amount of coins within the shortest time possible.
"Slider" also plays while the level is active. The Goal Pole animation and the "Course Clear" jingle still also play upon completion.
Special Pipe: Peach's Castle[edit]
The Special Pipe: Peach's Castle[3] is a variant of the Start Pipe appearing in set 71408 Princess Peach's Castle, featuring Peach's emblem. When scanned, it starts an 80 second countdown, while "Peach's Castle" from Super Mario 64 plays instead of "Ground BGM".
Cannon Start Pipe[edit]
The Cannon Start Pipe[4] is another variant of the Start Pipe appearing in sets 71391 Bowser's Airship and 71437 The Bowser Express Train. It consists of a cannon resembling a Warp Cannon, using the same pieces as the Start Pipe. When scanned, the cannon acts like a Start Pipe, starting a timer with 90 seconds. An explosion sound effect, along with Bowser's roar, is played instead of the pipe sound effect, and "Airship BGM" from Super Mario Bros. 3 plays instead of "Ground BGM".
