Guarded Fortress is a LEGO Super Mario expansion set released as part of the first wave of sets, on August 1, 2020. The set consists of a Fortress which features three alternate paths leading up to it.
The left path is made up of ground-themed platforms with a staircase leading up to a lowered Goal Pole with Mario's flag. A green Koopa Troopa is placed at the top of the staircase. An interactive figure can knock the Koopa Troopa over by pressing on a lever besides it. Jumping on the Koopa Troopa's back twice awards the player with coins. The interactive figure can also press on a lever besides the Goal Pole to flip it up.
The middle path consists of a simple lava-themed path with stone platforms and a Bob-omb. When it is knocked sideways and jumped on, the Bob-omb is lit, represented by the sound of its fuse burning. the figure can then jump on it repeatedly to earn coins before it triggers an explosion effect. If the figure is on top of the Bob-omb as it explodes, they lose the coins gained from jumping. The Bob-omb figure included in this set is identical to the one included in the first series of Character Packs.
The right path is water-themed and features a Piranha Plant rising from a pipe. A lever placed in front of it can be hit to cause the Piranha Plant to retreat into the pipe, revealing a scannable Action Tag on the ground. When scanned, it defeats the Piranha Plant, awarding the figure with coins.
All three paths lead to a central platform containing a POW Block. The POW Block can be scanned for an explosion effect, and pressing down on it causes the fortress's door to flip open, allowing the figure to enter. On the door is also another Action Tag that grants coins when scanned.
