Casual Nintendo historian. Otherwise an artist and a professional zoologist. Bio degree. I've had an account here since 2012.

I wrote the character sections for Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. I contributed much of the article for Super Mario Sunshine and am currently working on Super Mario Galaxy.

I have been a fan of Nintendo since a very young age. My first Mario games (and three of the first video games I ever owned) were Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, Super Mario 64 DS, and Mario Kart DS. These games were good company for a young kid who moved around a lot and had difficulty keeping long-lasting friends.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I sequentially played some of my favorite games in the Super Mario series to 100% completion. This includes, in order, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. I will complete this marathon with Super Mario Odyssey. It's been really fun so far! These are great games, and I always wanted to marathon a series like this before but never had the time. It has been interesting to see where the series began and where it has ended up. The design philosophies, the characters, the art directions, world building, level design, narrative, etc. All good stuff. It might be fun to write something about it some day.

My favorite video game character is Yoshi.

Diminutive Whomps which only appear in the Whomp King's boss fight. They are summoned in groups of three or five and chase Mario, falling flat on their faces in an attempt to crush him. Prickly Piranha Plant
A black Spiny Piranha Plant with extra spikes on its head, granting it immunity to being stomped. Prickly Piranha Plant violently slams its head into the ground in an attempt to crush Mario, just like its purple counterpart. It can only be defeated by spinning a rubbery bulb at it, when its head is stuck in the ground. Only one Prickly Piranha Plant appears in the game. Sky Station Galaxy TBD

Silver Chomp
Silver unchained Chain Chomps which roll towards Mario to hit him. Silver Chomps can be defeated by running into one as Rainbow Mario, by pushing one off a cliff while on a Star Ball, or by spinning a rubbery bulb into them. Rolling Masterpiece Galaxy

Spherical winged creatures which flee from Mario, but upon seeing Yoshi, they float towards him and latch on to his mouth to kiss him, remaining there as long as they can. This prevents Yoshi from using his tongue or eating fruits. Smeeches also kiss Yoshi if he tries to eat one. Swaphopper
Insect-like shelled enemies which hop sideways into Mario. Swaphoppers only appear in two-dimensional areas with alternating gravity. They possess a spiked shell on one of their sides which is invulnerable to attacks, and a soft underbelly which can be stomped on to defeat them. The alternating gravity means that Swaphoppers alternate between being vulnerable and being immune to attacks when the gravity switches. Rightside Down Galaxy

Walking bombs that look like wind-up toys. There are two varieties: Bob-ombs that actively pursue Mario until they explode and legless bombs than can be picked up and thrown. The legless variety can be used to destroy cages, enemies, and trash in the Bob-omb Blasting minigame. Jumping on a walking Bob-omb causes its legs to recede into its body and become this second variant. Rolling Masterpiece Galaxy

Explosive Boos. Unlike normal Boos, Bomb Boos do not cower when faced by Mario. They charge directly towards him on sight. Spinning near a Bomb Boo causes Mario to grab onto its tongue and swing it in circles, like a lasso. It detonates if it is swung into an object or wall. If Mario does not release the Bomb Boo, it is pulled in closer and explodes in his face. Bomb Boos are conjured by Bouldergeist and can be used to destroy the boss's stone armor. Bomp
Large, moving stones that shift in-and-out of crevices found on walls. They do not damage Mario directly, but they are positioned to push him off of platforms and solid ground. The tops of their bodies can be walked on. Fluffy Bluff Galaxy

Boo
Round ghosts with long tongues. They pursue Mario when his back is turned towards them. If Mario looks directly at Boos, they sheepishly shield their their eyes and stop moving. Spinning them causes them to shift their position and forces them to phase through nearby walls, but they cannot be damaged this way. Boos are only weak to beacons of light – including the headlamp of the Toad Brigade Captain. Some can be found underwater. A rival character called the Spooky Speedster is of this species, and Mario can transform into one via the Boo Mushroom. Normal Boos become infatuated with Mario if encountered in his Boo form. Boulder
Giant, rolling rocks. They are composed of cragged stones with a red gem in their center. Boulders roll around in circles or off the sides of platforms, damaging Mario on contact. Striking them in their red gem with a spin destroys them. There are cliffside caves that continuously release Boulders indefinitely in several galaxies. Angry-looking missiles that are fired from Bill Blasters. They normally fly in a straight line, but they change course and directly target Mario if he is within their proximity. A Dry Bones
Dry Bones
Undead Koopa Troopas. They chase down and tackle Mario on sight. If stomped on, spun, or hit with a shell, Dry Bones crumble into a pile of bones, but regenerate after a few seconds. There are three ways to truly defeat Dry Bones: by luring a Bullet Bill into them; by running into them as Rainbow Mario; or by luring them into quicksand. Bowser Jr.'s Fiery Flotilla

Floating Mine
Spiked bombs that are suspended in mid-air. They are usually fixed in one spot, but some move in vertical and horizontal trajectories in a few galaxies. The helmets protrude from the ground as the Undergrunts burrow, enabling the player to track their movements. Caterpillars that amble around in circles. Performing a ground-pound on nearby earth or directly spinning one flips a Wiggler on its back. If the incapacitated Wiggler is not defeated within five seconds, it becomes angry and uprights itself. An enraged Wiggler is much faster and cannot be harmed.
