"9001: A Mario Odyssey" is the twenty-seventh live-action segment of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Its corresponding animated episode is "On Her Majesty's Sewer Service."
Plot synopsis[edit]
A programmer named Albert Einstein is at Mario Brothers Plumbing, typing away into a special computer/pizza machine labeled HAL 9001. Luigi asks if Einstein is ever going to be finished, just as Einstein announces that the computer is ready. The computer starts to talk, introducing itself as the HAL 9001 computer and pizza machine.
Einstein asks how HAL is doing, and the computer assures him that nothing is wrong with its programming. Einstein then introduces HAL to Mario and Luigi, but Luigi does not like the idea of talking to a machine. HAL tells Luigi that he does not need to worry.
When Mario asks Einstein about the pizzas, Einstein gives his order to HAL: A pepperoni pizza with no anchovies or fried eggs. Einstein tells Mario that he needs to specify for no anchovies or fried eggs or HAL will put them on the pizza. Almost instantly, HAL prepares a pepperoni pizza for Mario. Einstein explains that HAL never makes mistakes, leaving Mario and Luigi alone with the computer, and tells them to call if they have any questions.
Luigi then places an order for a sausage pizza with no anchovies or fried eggs. Later on, Mario and Luigi order unconventional pizzas like a hamburger pizza (with actual hamburgers), and a baloney pizza. However, instead of a baloney pizza, HAL prepares a golf pencil pizza, which confuses the brothers. HAL then follows up with a nurse shoe pizza, even though an order was not even placed, and assures Mario and Luigi that nothing is wrong with it. Luigi asks HAL to just make a baloney pizza, and is given a dog biscuit pizza instead.
After a popcorn pizza is made, Luigi opts to simply pull HAL's plug, but HAL says that it will not allow that. Retaliating, HAL tells Mario and Luigi to gaze into its eye, and succeeds in putting them in a trance. While they are under its spell, HAL, feeling that it had worked to make the pizzas, orders Mario and Luigi to eat all of the pizzas it made. At that point, Einstein returns, as he forgot to give Mario and Luigi his bill.
When Einstein sees what HAL has done, he frantically unplugs all of the computer's cords, and, after a while, succeeds in terminating the system. With HAL offline, Mario and Luigi come to their senses, and Einstein apologizes for everything, saying that they would have had to eat HAL's horrible pizzas if he had not arrived. Mario then asks, "What horrible pizzas?", and starts eating the popcorn pizza.

- In the Latin American Spanish dub:
- The pizza that Albert Einstein requests at the beginning of the episode is a small pizza. In the original version, it is a pepperoni pizza.
- In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, Einstein instead requests a pepper pizza.
- In the second half of the episode, instead requesting baloney pizza, Mario and Luigi ask for shrimp and meatball pizza. As a result, when HAL prepares the golf pencil pizza, Mario mentions that the "shrimps" do not come from the sea, as opposed to mentioning that the "baloney" is not the baloney that comes from the store.
- In the original version, When Mario says that he and Luigi should not waste the golf pencil pizza, Luigi says that the pizza is worse than pineapple pizza. In the dub, he instead says that, if he does not want to waste the golf pencil pizza, he might as well not waste sock pizza as well.
- The pizza that Albert Einstein requests at the beginning of the episode is a small pizza. In the original version, it is a pepperoni pizza.

The episode's title is a reference to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as the novel of the same name.

- This was one of the 12 live-action segments that were absent on Shout! Factory's DVDs due to legal issues.
- When Shout! Factory released The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! complete series on two DVD sets, four of the episodes were presented as "cartoon only" bonus episodes. The four missing "lost" live-action segments were: "Baby Mario Love", "9001: A Mario Odyssey", "Texas Tea" and "George Washington Slept Here". The first three were finally released on DVD in Australia. The six disc set is a region free NTSC format collection that contains 50 of the 52 Super Mario episodes of the show. All episodes include the cartoon, live-action segments, and The Legend of Zelda previews (no Zelda preview for "Day of the Orphan"), but do not contain commercial bumpers. The missing episodes on this collection are "Rolling Down the River/The Mario Monster Mash" and "The Unzappables/George Washington Slept Here".[7] All four of these "lost" episodes, including "George Washington Slept Here", are on a German DVD set, presented the same way as above, but without the Zelda previews. They are presented with dual English and German audio on PAL format DVDs.[8][9][10][11]
- In the original version, a running gag in the second half episode is that Mario and Luigi ask HAL to make them a baloney pizza, but end up receiving various unconventional pizzas, due to baloney also meaning "nonsense."
