Moto Bugs are coccinellid robots created by Dr. Eggman that first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog, being the first Badnik that Sonic encounters. Their only crossover appearance with the Super Mario franchise is in both versions of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

In the Nintendo 3DS version, Moto Bugs appear as obstacles in the Equestrian Plus event, where they drive towards players in rows of three, slowing them down upon contact. The player should jump over them to avoid them. Moto Bugs also appear as walls on Hole 9 during the Golf Plus event, where they use their original sprite appearance. A Moto Bug wall it will disappear if the player's golf ball hits it wall here, leading the golf ball itself landing safely on the lawn without falling onto unfavorable terrain.

In the Wii U version, Moto Bugs appear as items that players can use in the Duel Beach Volleyball event. Here, the player who uses a Moto Bug will deploy a it, allowing it to move under the net and charge straight ahead towards opponents. If hit by the Moto Bug, the player will be stunned and lose 15 duel points; however, the player can jump over the Moto Bug to dodge its attack.
