A Shy Guy, as seen in Super Mario RPG.

Shy Guys are troublemakers that wear robes and masks.

Shy Guys first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2, though chronologically, or in time order, they first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They are under Kamek and Bowser's army.

Shy Guys are among Mario's most persistent foes and have been in dozens of games, each time working for the main bad guy(s). Nobody knows what is behind a Shy Guy's mask, although in Luigi's Mansion, Luigi could use his Poltergust 3000 to blow the mask off a Shy Guy ghost, revealing no face, just two glowing yellow eyes. This may or may not be what a living Shy Guy looks like. In Mario Power Tennis, a Shy Guy's mask fell off. The player could not see the Shy Guy's face, but Luigi did, and gasped in surprise.

A Shy Guy's main weapon is its slingshot, although they've been known to create a ton of weapons from submarines to bombs.

In addition to being a common enemy throughout the Mario games, Shy Guys also appear sometimes in Mario sports titles, such as Mario Tennis, Mario Kart DS, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Mario Power Tennis, where he took on the alias of Spear Guy to perform Power Shots. Fly Guy was his unlockable partner in Mario Power Tennis. Additionally, Shy Guy is usually involved in some non-playable way in the Mario Party series.

Shy Guys will also appear in the Mario Circuit course of Super Smash Bros. Brawl racing in their karts from Mario Kart DS.

Regular Shy Guys come in red, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, and pink. Certain sub-species of Shy Guys also come in other colors (Good Guys, Anti Guys, etc.). The color of a Shy Guy's shoes depends more on the game than on the type of Shy Guy.

Notable Shy Guys

Sub-Species

  • Anti Guys (also known as Deadly Guys): Gray Shy Guys that are much more powerful than normal Shy Guys. Their favorite treat is probably Lemon Candy, as one in the game Paper Mario could be bribed out of fighting you if you gave it one to suck on.
  • Baseball Boys: Similar in appearance to Zeus Guys, these Shy Guys come in two baseball-themed types, Green Gloves (also known as Pitcher or Catcher Boys) and Sluggers (also known as Hitter Boys). They work as a team, and are the Shy Guy equivalent of Hammer Bros. Green Gloves are green, Sluggers are yellow. They can both send Yoshi's eggs right back at him. Sluggers can even bat objects as big as Chomp Rocks at Yoshi.
  • Barbecue Guys: Red Shy Guys with torches that shoot long jets of flame.
  • Boo Guys: White, spectral Shy Guys.
  • Boom Guys: Red Shy Guys with Bill Blasters. Elite Boom Guys fire their Bullet Bills much faster, and are blue.
  • Chuck Guys: Dancing Spear Guys with topknots. They come in purple and blue.
  • Fat Guys: Obese Shy Guys that run faster after being attacked. They come in red and green.
  • Fly Guys: Shy Guys with propellers on their heads. In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, they could spit fire. They are usually found carrying useful items, such as 1-Ups, Coins, and Red Coins. Fly Guys come in all of the colors that regular Shy Guys do, except pink. Mecha Fly Guys are mechanical Fly Guys with wind-up keys in their backs. They only come in red.
  • Groove Guys: Red Shy Guys dressed as jesters that dance to call in reinforcements.
  • Limbo Guys: Dancing Spear Guys that work in color-coded pairs to hold up limbo poles, which they try to use to hinder the player's progress in some way. They are the only Shy Guys that can actually sing well.
  • Mace Guys: Red Shy Guys that swing maces around.
  • Medi Guys: Red Shy Guys that ride in large, hovering, ambulance-like vehicles and heal allies like emergency workers.
  • Melon Guys: Taller, thinner versions of Red Shy Guys that flatten into pancakes and spit out streams of watermelon seeds when stomped on.
  • Mini-Shy Guys: Wind-up toys in the forms of Red Shy Guys.
  • Mock Ups: Self-inflating balloons with the word "1-Up" on them that come in red and green, and will pop if not eaten by a Yoshi. A Fly Guy will fly out of it if it does pop.

  • Mufti Guys: Shy Guys that have flowers on their heads. They hide in flowerbeds with only their flowers sticking out. Petal Guy was a Mufti Guy.
  • Mummy Guys: Wind-up toys in the forms of mummified Shy Guys.
  • Phantom Guys: Tiny, spectral Shy Guys that turn into blocks if you hit a switch that corresponds to their color. They come in red and blue.
  • Pyro Guys (also known as Flamer Guys): Shy Guys that have somehow caught fire. They run faster than normal Shy Guys.
  • Shysters: Mechanical Shy Guys created by Smithy that ride atop pogo sticks with swords attached to the bottoms of their springs.
  • Sky Guys: Shy Guys with three balloons tied to their backs, which allow them to float up high in the sky. They will attack their enemies with a number of weapons, from crates, to bombs, to slingshots.
  • Snifits: Shy Guys with elongated, even tube-like mouth-holes on their masks, allowing them to shoot different types of projectiles, usually bullets, at their enemies. Plus, their masks are black, instead of white. (With the exception of the Snufits in Super Mario 64 and Mario Party 2. However, the Snufits in Super Mario 64 DS had black gas masks.) There are so many sub-species of Snifits that now-a-days, many people put them in their own category.
  • Spear Guys: A Shy Guy island native that wears a grass skirt and red face paint, and wields a spear. They come in all of the colors that normal Shy Guys do. Cannibal Guys are basically dancing Spear Guys that only come in yellow, and their spears are longer than most Spear Guys' (some Spear Guys have REALLY long spears). Depending on the island they live on, some Spear Guys have topknots.
  • Spy Guys (also known as Stealth Guys): Shy Guys that use camo clothing to hide. They have flowers on their heads, just like Mufti Guys.
  • Stilt Guys: Shy Guys on stilts. They come in all of the colors that normal Shy Guys do. Big Guy the Stilted was made to look like a giant Red Stilt Guy.
  • Zeus Guys: Humanoid Shy Guys with karate outfits and knowledge of martial arts (they also fire lightning). They're nearly invulnerable.

Paper Mario Stats and Tattle Information

Anti-Guy

  • HP: 50
  • Attack: 10
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is an Anti Guy. His attacks are so intense that he's also called Deadly Guy. His attack power is 12 when he does an acrobatic attack, so dodge it! This guy is for real, so we'd better take him seriously.

General Guy

  • HP: 30
  • Attacks
  • Bomb Toss: Tosses a bomb at Mario. Does 4 damage.
  • Lightning Slam: If you don't get rid of the bulb in the tank, it'll shoot a lightning bolt at Mario and his partner. Does 2 damage to Mario's ally. Does 5 damage to Mario.
  • Defense: 2
  • Tattle: This is General Guy in his tank. The tank seems to be dangerous even though it's a toy. Not only does the General give commands from the tank, but he also throws bombs and uses electric attacks. The power of his electric attack is 5, and your party member takes 2 damage points, so defend yourself carefully. He'll lose the electric attack if we break the light bulb. Normal fighting styles seem ineffective because the tank is well fortified.

Groove Guy

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 2
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is a Groove Guy. Groove Guys wear weird clothes. They're probably stage clothes. Pssh... You know performers... They shake their booties to call in reinforcements. They also spin around in front of you and make you feel dizzy. These rock 'n' rollers are a drag, so let's ditch 'em as fast as we can.

Medi Guy

  • HP: 100
  • Attack: 20
  • Defense: 20
  • Tattle: This is a Medi Guy. Medi Guys are the emergency workers of the Shy Guy clan. They have the power to heal their wounded companions. Of course, they also attack. We'd better hurry up and take them out of the mix. It's a pain if they keep fixing all the damage we do.

Pyro Guy

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 4
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is a Pyro Guy. Pyro Guys are on fire, so any contact with them will cause damage. They're tough opponents, mainly because their attack power is so high. Any attacks that involve water or snow are our best bet because,...well...you know.

Regular Shy Guy

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 2
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is a Shy Guy. They're ne'er-do-wells. Big time rascals. No good... They occasionally do acrobatic attacks that have an attack power of 3. Who knows what lies in the hearts of these troublemakers? I guess they're dangerous, but they're pretty small time.

Shy Squad

  • HP: 15
  • Attack: ? (attack power is equal to how many HP they have)
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is the Shy Squad. It'll attack us with all its members at once. The number of times we're attacked will equal the number of Shy Guys in the Squad. Its attack power is huge when there are many guys, but it drops fast for each one that falls. Let's use an attack that does tons of damage so we can decrease their numbers and increase our chances!

Shy Stack

  • HP: 10
  • Attack: 1 (Attack power is equal to how many shy guys there are)
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is a Shy Stack. Whoa, this pile has an incredible sense of balance! Look at that stack! Its attack power equals the number of Guys in the stack. It will be 4 if there are four Shy Guys stacked up. If you have the Spin Hammer ability, you can knock 'em off one by one. Obviously, their attack power decreases when there are fewer of 'em in the stack.

Sky Guy

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 3
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is a Sky Guy. Sky Guys are master balloonists. We can attack the balloon, too. Once they fall, they're just like normal Shy Guys. I wish I had a balloon so I could float... That looks awesome!

Spy Guy

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 2
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is a Spy Guy. Spy Guys look like they're ready for war in their spiffy camouflage gear! They change their weapons each time they're attacked. You'd best try to avoid their hammer attack! Every time you're hit by it, you'll lose one of your commands!

Stilt Guy

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 4
  • Defense: 0
  • Tattle: This is Stilt Guy. Yes, as the name suggests, Stilt Guys are Shy Guys on Stilts. I mean, it seems pretty obvious to me... If you attack 'em by shaking the ground, they'll fall off their stilts and become normal Shy Guys.

Super Smash Bros. Melee trophy information

There are many types of Shy Guys: they've been known to walk on the ground, fly through the air, traipse about on stilts, wear flowers or camouflage, throw balls, swing bats, sail on pirate ships, carry fruit, do the Bamboo Dance, ride submarines, play guitar, play tennis, wear red, come in large or small sizes, steal people's toys, cause mischief...
