"Athletic BGM"[1] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for the athletic levels in Super Mario World. It is an upbeat ragtime arrangement of "Ground BGM" from the same game.

Super Mario World[edit]

In Super Mario World, bongo percussion is added to the instrumentation of "Athletic BGM" whenever the player is riding a Yoshi. This arrangement is titled "Yoshi Athletic BGM" in the Nintendo Music app.

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]

In Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, the Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario World, an arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays in all of the same levels as the original game. This arrangement plays in a slightly high pitch, however. Additional percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player rides a Yoshi.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, an arrangement of "Athletic BGM," titled "Hightail Falls Galaxy" in the Nintendo Music app and arranged by Mahito Yokota,[2] plays in Hightail Falls Galaxy and during the mission "Purple Coin Beach Dash" in Starshine Beach Galaxy. The tempo increases and a violin run is added whenever Yoshi uses a Dash Pepper.

Super Mario Maker 2 features two arrangements of "Athletic BGM."

An ambient arrangement of "Athletic BGM" using eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix plays while the player edits Super Mario World–style sky-themed courses in the Course Maker.

A music box arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays during the nighttime version of sky-themed levels in the Super Mario World style.

An arrangement of "Athletic BGM" is one of the themes that can play in the Super Mario Bros. Mushroom World pinball arcade game.

Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, a bluegrass arrangement of "Athletic BGM" played on banjo with upright bass and bongo accompaniment, titled "Yoshi's Island" and arranged by Hirokazu Ando, plays in the Yoshi's Island stage. This arrangement returns in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where the theme is titled "Yoshi's Island (Melee)" and can play in the same stage; Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, where it can play in the Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Maker stages; and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where the theme is titled "Athletic Theme - Super Mario World" and can play in any Super Smash Bros.–series and Yoshi-series stage. In all reappearances sans Brawl, it is categorized as a Yoshi-series track, rather than a Super Mario–series track.

In Mario Sports Mix, three arrangements of "Athletic BGM," titled "Mario Athletic," "Punk Athletic," and "Island Athletic," are available as playable songs in Harmony Hustle.

Nintendo Land[edit]

In Nintendo Land, an arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays on the Mud River Run stage in Mario Chase. When 60 seconds remain, the theme speeds up significantly, and when 30 seconds remain, the theme speeds up even more and is transposed to a higher key.
