Super Paper Mario description A must-have item for any space explorer.

The Helmet is an important item in Super Paper Mario. It is used to allow Mario, Princess Peach, Bowser and eventually Luigi to survive in Outer Space. It is worn during Chapter 4-1 and Chapter 4-3, as well as during the Brobot fight during Chapter 4-4. It cannot be equipped elsewhere in the game. While most characters general appearance is unchanged while the helmet is worn, Princess Peach has her hair tied in a ponytail when equipped with the helmet.

History[edit]

The Helmet originally belonged to Merlon, but it was given away to Pook while he was cleaning his shelves. Pook would use it as a Goldfish Bowl to contain his pet goldfish Captain Gills, who had outgrown his previous living space.

At the start of Chapter 4, Mario and his team discover that they need a helmet in order to survive in Outer Space, Merlon asks them to go and retrieve the Goldfish Bowl from Pook. Pook explains to them that Captain Gills has grown so much that even the goldfish bowl had grown too small to accommodate him. He agrees to give them the bowl to use as a helmet provided that they find a proper environment for his goldfish to live in first.

In order to release Captain Gills, the player must bring him to the first basement floor of Flipside, near The Underwhere, where the goldfish bowl can be emptied into the canal located there. Once this has been done, the helmet is available to be equipped once the player reenters Outer Space. If the player refuses to put the Helmet on enough times upon re-entering Chapter 4-1, the player will get a Game Over. This does not happen elsewhere in the game, as upon subsequent returns to Outer Space after the helmet has been equipped for the first time, the option to not wear it is no longer presented, and the character will be equipped with it automatically.

Notes[edit]

  • If the player enters an asteroid in the background of a section of Chapter 4-1, they will still be wearing their space helmet, yet Bowser can breathe fire as if it were not there. In addition, Tippi will perch herself atop Mario's hat if he falls asleep due to inactivity, passing right through the helmet in order to do so. This can only be seen in this asteroid, as the heroes do not fall asleep while floating in space and Bowser cannot use his fire breath.
    • Additionally, various certain animations will cause part of the graphics for the helmet to not render correctly, or partly disappear temporarily. Examples of this include charging a super jump with Luigi while inside the asteroid, turning invisible with Slim, or entering a Warp Pipe.
  • In a pre-release trailer for the game, Mario is wearing the space helmet while exploring the Whoa Zone, although it is not equipped in that area in the final game, other than during the battle against the Brobot.[1]
  • Concept art of the original Nintendo GameCube version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door seen in its Nintendo Switch remake features a sketch of Mario on the moon wearing a helmet that is not seen in the final game, the design of which was later used for the helmet in Super Paper Mario.
