"Athletic BGM",[1] also known as "Athletic Theme",[2] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for Super Mario World, where it plays in the athletic levels. It is an upbeat ragtime arrangement of "Ground BGM" from the same game.

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

Super Mario World marks the first appearance of "Athletic BGM".

Additional bongo percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is riding a Yoshi. This remix is titled "Yoshi Athletic BGM" in the Nintendo Music app.

Both "Athletic BGM" and "Yoshi Athletic BGM" return for the same purposes in the port of the game included in Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World.

"Athletic BGM" is also included in the official albums Super Mario World and The 30th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. Music. In the Super Mario World album, the bongos from "Yoshi Athletic BGM" are added to the instrumentation for the second half of the theme.

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]

In the Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario World, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, an arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays for the same purpose as in the original game. Additional percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player rides a Yoshi.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

In Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, an arrangement of "Athletic BGM" arranged by Mahito Yokota plays in Hightail Falls Galaxy, as well as in the mission "Purple Coin Beach Dash" in Starshine Beach Galaxy. It is titled "Hightail Falls Galaxy" in the Nintendo Music app. It is also included in the official Super Mario Galaxy 2 Original Soundtrack album.

Additional percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player rides Yoshi. Whenever Yoshi uses a Dash Pepper, the tempo of the theme increases and a violin run is added to the instrumentation.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker 2, the original version of "Athletic BGM" plays in Super Mario World-style sky-themed levels. "Yoshi Athletic BGM" from Super Mario World plays whenever the player rides a Yoshi.

An ambient arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays while editing Super Mario World-style sky-themed levels in the Course Maker. This arrangement uses eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix.

A music box arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays in the nighttime version of Super Mario World-style sky-themed levels.

Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, a bluegrass arrangement of "Athletic BGM" arranged by Hirokazu Ando plays in the Yoshi's Island stage. It is titled "Yoshi's Island" in the game's sound test. This arrangement is played on banjo, upright bass, and bongos.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Super Smash Bros. Melee version of "Athletic BGM" can once again play in the Yoshi's Island stage. It is titled "Yoshi's Island (Melee)" in the game's sound test.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the Super Smash Bros. Melee version of "Athletic BGM" can play in the Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Maker stages. It is once again titled "Yoshi's Island (Melee)" in the game's sound test.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Super Smash Bros. Melee version of "Athletic BGM" can play in any Super Smash Bros.-series and Yoshi-series stage. It is titled "Athletic Theme - Super Mario World" in the game's sound test.

Mario Sports Mix features three different arrangements of "Athletic BGM" as playable songs in Harmony Hustle: an orchestral arrangement titled "Mario Athletic", a punk rock arrangement titled "Punk Athletic", and a fast-paced steelpan arrangement titled "Island Athletic".

Nintendo Land[edit]

In Nintendo Land, an arrangement of "Athletic BGM" arranged by Ryo Nagamatsu plays in the Mud River Run stage in Mario Chase. When there are 60 seconds remaining, the theme speeds up significantly. When there are 30 seconds remaining, the theme speeds up even more and is transposed to a higher key.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a brief arrangement of "Athletic BGM" is incorporated in the track "Fighting Tooth and Veil", which plays when Mario obtains a Super Leaf to transform into his Tanooki form. It was arranged by Brian Tyler, and it is also included in the film's official soundtrack.
