Winky's Walkway

Template:Level Winky's Walkway is the sixth level in the popular Donkey Kong video game, Donkey Kong Country. It is also the first level in the Monkey Mines area, located on Donkey Kong Island.

In this short walkway level, the Kongs encounter many Neckies and also meet a new Animal Buddy, known as Winky the Frog. Winky helps them bounce to Banana Bunches, defeat enemies, and even reach Bonus Levels. This level also marks the first appearance of Oil Drums, although they only shoot enemies at the heroes here, rather than flames. Other foes in Winky's Walkway include Kritters, Gnawties, and a lone Zinger. This level is notably the shortest level in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy Advance versions of the game. In the Game Boy Color version, however, the level is expanded with more enemies and platforms.

Level Layout

Original and Game Boy Advance versions

At the start of the level, the Kongs find a Kritter which they must avoid along with a Necky containing the letter K which the Kongs must grab. The Kongs must then continue along and defeat two Kritters or release a Kong in the DK Barrel next to the two Kritters if a Kong is missing. Next, Donkey and Diddy Kong must jump across the small abyss to reach the other part of the land by jumping on a Necky. On this part, the Kongs find two Neckies along with a Winky crate in between it. The Kongs can get Winky to help them throughout the level. To do so, the Kongs must hop on a Necky and use it as a tire so they can get Winky and continue their adventure throughout the level.The Kongs and Winky must either avoid or defeat a Kritter along the path and jump across a small gap. With Winky's help crossing this gap, the Kongs and Winky can gain the letter O. The Kongs and Winky then must jump across to another ledge with six bananas, then jump onto the ledge to reach the Star Barrel.

Halfway throughout this short level, the Kongs and Winky must continue along and jump across a gap to go to the next small ledge with a DK Barrel and an Oil Drum sending out Gnawties. The Kongs and Winky must simply avoid these Gnawties and pass the Oil Drum to cross another gap. when the Kongs and Winky come to this gap, they see a Necky below a Bonus Barrel on which the Kongs and Winky can enter to gain many bananas along with the letter N. When the Kongs and Winky are done in this Bonus Level, they warp at the end of a ledge with an Oil Drum spewing out Gnawties. The Kongs and Winky must continue hopping over a few more ledges along with avoiding a Necky below the ledges until they reach a large ledge containing a Zinger and an Animal Token. Next the Kongs and Winky must avoid a Necky and grab the letter G and hop onto the ledge containing the exit sign and the final Oil Drum spewing Gnawties. Next, the Kongs must go up the final ledge with a line of bumps and bananas which lead the Kongs to the exit so they can go onto the next level.

Game Boy Color version

The Kongs start off on a long set of scaffolds, many of which that are tilted. As in the original version, they can find a Kritter and a Necky with the K letter above it here. After passing the first Necky, they head along some flat scaffolds that hold a few Kritters. A small pit is ahead, which can be crossed with the help of a Necky flying over it. On the other side of the pit, they can find a slanted platform leading to some leveled scaffolds, which hold a Kritter. Two Neckies are also here that fly next to a hanging platform nearby, containing an Animal Crate with Winky inside of it. After hopping to a small platform carrying six bananas and then to a slightly larger platform with a DK Barrel on it, the Kongs can find a long, flat scaffold ahead of them that supports an Oil Drum that shoot Gnawties. Another set of scaffolds are ahead of here, and a Necky flies above the first of the platforms. A Barrel Cannon leading to the first Bonus Level floats over it. The heroes can also find another Oil Drum here after heading down a slanted platform. The Oil Drum is followed by two small platforms that hang over a large abyss. Upon landing on the second platform, a Banana Bunch is revealed from the ground. A Necky flies in a pit just before a long, flat scaffold ahead of here, and they can bounce on the vulture to cross it. They can find a Zinger guarding a Banana Bunch high in the air on the other side of the pit. Once the duo travels across the long scaffold, they approach a small pit with a Necky flying up and down in it. The letter N hovers above the platform following this pit. If the primates travel down some more scaffolds ahead of here, they find an Oil Drum and a small pit that is followed by a slanted platform leading up to a leveled platform. The level's Star Barrel floats above it.

Now about halfway through the level, the Kongs can find some scaffolds after a small pit, which hold a Kritter. Three smaller platform are ahead of here, hanging over a wide abyss. The first of the platforms supports a DK Barrel and is followed by a Necky, while the final platform is also placed next to a Necky, who flies under a hidden Animal Token of Expresso. A large scaffold is ahead of these platforms, and it holds a few bananas. The heroes can cross a wide pit ahead of it by bouncing on a nearby Necky. On the other side of the pit, they can find a slanted scaffold that leads the heroes to a more leveled platform. A scaffold hangs above it that supports a Gnawty-spewing Oil Drum. Another scaffold that holds a Gnawty-spitting Oil Drum can be found after a wide pit, which can only be crossed with the help of the two Neckies the fly in it. A slanted scaffold follows the Oil Drum with a small pit containing a Necky ahead of it. The vulture is followed by a small platform that holds a DK Barrel. After the heroes cross a pit ahead of this platform, they reach a set of scaffolds that lead them higher into the level. At the edge of the last scaffold, they can find a trail of bananas leading down to a small platform. A Necky flies near the banana trail that they can bounce on to reach a small platform supporting the letter G. The Kongs can find a long scaffold under this platform that is completely void of enemies, except for a single Mini-Necky at the end of it. A small platform follows the small bird enemy that holds a sign, indicating that the level is near complete. Once they cross a small pit containing a Necky, they reach a platform that hangs under a Zinger, who guards an Extra Life Balloon. A slanted scaffold is ahead of here that takes them towards an exit sign. If they travel past the sign, they are sent to the next level, Mine Cart Carnage.

Hidden Collectibles and Objects

K-O-N-G Letters

Original and Game Boy Advance versions

• K: The letter K is located above the level's first Necky.
• O: The letter O is placed above a small pit immediately after Winky's crate.
• N: The heroes can find the letter N in the center of the first Bonus Level.
• G: The letter G is located above the pit with the final Necky of the level.

Game Boy Color version

• K: The Kongs can find the letter K above the first Necky of the level.
• O: The letter O is placed in the center of the level's only Bonus Level.
• N: The primates can find the letter N next to a pit that is located near the final Oil Drum before the Star Barrel.
• G: Shortly before the level's first and only Mini-Necky, the primates can find a small platform, which holds the letter G, hanging above them. They must bounce on a nearby Necky to reach it.

Bonus Levels

Original and Game Boy Advance versions

• After the Star Barrel, the Kongs and Winky must find a large platform with a Necky guarding a Bonus Barrel above it. They must either bounce on the enemy or hop into the barrel with Winky to reach the special barrel, which sends them to a Bonus Level. In this Bonus Level, the Kongs and Winky find a ton of bananas and Banana Bunches, along with the letter N. The Banana Bunches at the top of the Bonus Level can only be obtained with Winky's help. They can simply walk into the area ahead to exit the bonus.

Game Boy Color version

• In the Game Boy Color version, the first Bonus Level can be found before the Star Barrel. After the heroes pass the second DK Barrel, they can find a Necky hovering under an Auto Fire Barrel. They can bounce on it to reach the barrel or jump into it with Winky. It sends them into a Bonus Level, where, as is the original version, many bananas and Banana Bunches can be found.

Warp Barrel

• When the primates reach Winky's crate, they should free him and begin to ride on him. If they jump to the left from the platform he is found on, they can reach a hidden Warp Barrel that leads to a slanted scaffold before the exit sign. This warp only appears in the Game Boy Advance version of the game.
