Super Mario Backpack Buddies
The Super Mario Backpack Buddies are a series of figurines produced by Paladone, a United Kingdom–based company, and distributed by UCC Distribution. All of them come with large plastic keychains, intended to be attached to backpacks, and they are sold in blind bags, meaning that buyers do not know which figurine they are purchasing until they open the bag. Four lines of figurines are based on the Super Mario franchise, with two based on the main Super Mario series, one based on Mario Kart 8, and one consisting entirely of Yoshis. All feature eight characters, enemies, or items with a rare ninth "chase" figurine that has a one-in-48 chance of appearing.
The original concept came about after Paladone pitched a series of unrelated ideas to Nintendo, who then told Paladone that UCC Distributing was interested in creating an official line of Nintendo-based keychains.[1] This resulted in four separate series of Backpack Buddies: the original Super Mario and Mario Kart 8 lines, as well as The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing series being distributed as Backpack Buddies. After the success of the first wave of keychains, Paladone developed the two additional Super Mario lines as well as a line based on various Nintendo controllers and handhelds in the following years. A line based on the Cat Mario form and its variants was also originally planned for 2017.[1]
