History[edit]

Paper Mario series[edit]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]

“Wow, you've got a fan sticker, right? Super cool! And you're a sticker fan! Super mind blowing!”

The Fan Sticker
The Fan as a sticker

In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, the Fan is found in W1-2, Bouquet Gardens. It produces a large breeze that destroys a Toad's flower garden and blows Goombas towards Mario. If Mario starts a battle with a Goomba, the breeze causes Mario, the Goomba, and background elements to shake, although this does not have any affect on gameplay. Mario is also unable to progress past the flower garden area while the Fan is on. Standing in front of the Fan causes Mario to be blown back to the flower garden. Checking the Fan makes Mario turn it off and collect it. It remains in Mario's Album until it is turned into a sticker at a Sling-a-Thing station. Once it has been used as a sticker, it returns to its original position. It may also be purchased from the Shady Toad for 130 coins and sold as a sticker for 20 coins.

As a sticker, it takes up four squares in Mario's Album. When it is used in a battle, the background retracts as a fanfare plays. The Fan rises up and turns on, causing a whirlwind that lifts up any enemies who are not anchored to the ground such as Piranha Plants. Instead, they remain on the ground and take less damage. The Fan then stops and lowers, causing all lifted enemies to fall back down. The player may continuously press A Button as the wind picks up to increase the damage dealt.

The Fan is mandatory to complete W1-4, Hither Thither Hill. Mario must Paperize near the windmill and use the Fan in the paperization zone. After placing the Fan, it appears in the background in a giant state and turns on. It causes most objects to wobble, lifts all present enemies, and turns the blades of the windmill. After it stops, the enemies return to the ground without getting hurt and Mario is able to enter the windmill.

The Fan can be placed into the Sticker Museum as #7, alongside other wind-based thing stickers. In a pre-release screenshot, the Fan did not appear from the background but instead on the battleground still in a sticker form.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]

The Fan scene

In Paper Mario: Color Splash, the Fan is found at Cherry Lake. It produces a breeze that blows Shy Guys towards Mario and lifts the bridge to Justice Toad. If Mario starts a battle with a Shy Guy, the breeze causes Mario, the Shy Guy, and background elements to shake. In addition, defeating the Shy Guy causes its remains to blow away in the wind. While the Fan is on, Mario is unable to progress to Inner Cherry Lake. To reach the Fan, Mario must use Cutout to reach the land it is on. Once the Fan has been picked up, it is wrung out, refills Mario's paint, and become a colorless card. Once it has been used as a card, it returns to its original position. It can also be purchased from the Wringer for 300 coins and sold as an unpainted card for 1 coin. A replica version of the Fan can be collected from the Battle Spin.

When it is used in battle, the background fades into space and leaves Mario and the enemies floating. Mario floats away as the Fan rises from behind Earth. It turns on and causes the enemies to hit the screen and Earth to spin rapidly. The enemies fall away as the Fan stops. The player may continuously press A Button as the wind picks up to increase the damage dealt.

The Fan is mandatory to rescue Surfing Kinopio at Bloo Bay Beach and to help the boat at Violet Passage set off. In both scenarios, Mario must use Cutout to make space for the Fan card. At Bloo Bay Beach, the rock in the distance splits to reveal the Fan. The blades spin so fast that it blows away nearby rocks, dislodges the blade guard, and creates a giant wave that engulfs Surfing Kinopio. At Violet Passage, the rock in the distance splits to reveal the Fan as well. The Fan makes enough wind so that the ship can move.

The Fan can also be placed into the Prisma Museum, where it can be tested.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]

The Fan returns in Paper Mario: The Origami King, although not as a collectible item. When Mario completes a puzzle on Bonehead Island, the Fan is seen rising up in the background, accompanied by music similar to its appearance in Sticker Star. The blades spin rapidly as it dispels the fog from the Great Sea, and it sinks back into the water once it finishes.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

The Fan from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Fan appears in the first portion of the Paper Mario stage. It rises and causes a gust that turns the windmill's blades and pushes fighters, the cloud platform, and items to the right. The gust may also cause the cloud platform and Warp Pipe to fly away.
