Tug o' War is a 1-vs-3 minigame in Mario Party, Mario Party: The Top 100, and Mario Party Superstars.
Overview[edit]
The gameplay is a variation of that of tug of war. The solo player (which is always the human player when playing on Mini-Game Island in Mario Party) wears a Bowser Suit and pulls the rope on one side, while the other three players pull on the opposite side. The side that rotates slower ends up falling into a giant Piranha Plant's mouth and loses. If none of the characters fall into the Piranha Plant's mouth before time runs out, the minigame is a draw.
During the ending, if the solo player wins, they walk up, look in, and laugh, but in Mario Party Superstars, they pump their fist instead. If the team players win, each of them strikes their victory pose. In Mario Party, if the solo player wins, they receive five coins from each team player, but if the solo player loses, the team players each receive five coins from the solo player. Mario Party also has a Bowser Space variation where the losing players lose coins, including in the event of a draw. In Mario Party Superstars, there is the usual outcome of the winning side earning 10 coins.
Tug o' War costs 150 coins to buy at the Mini-Game House in Mario Party when it becomes available for purchase.

Notes[edit]
- In Mario Party, the onscreen text has a typo if the team players win, "<players' names> WINS!"
- Tug o' War is one of the minigames infamous for giving players injuries on their hands, besides Paddle Battle, Pedal Power, and, to a lesser extent, Cast Aways and Deep Sea Divers. The Mario Party Superstars version has a disclaimer on the rules screen that warns players not to turn the stick with their palms to avoid hand injury and stick damage. A similar warning that gives the same advice is shown in the Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Classics re-release of Mario Party.
