Springhoppers are tiny, grasshopper-like creatures with coiled bodies that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Initially perceived as simply hoppers, Springhoppers appear in several habitats, usually from under a rock or from tall grass, and typically net a discovery for the creature of said habitat when all of them are caught. It is not until the Miniworld habitat Magnified Springhopper where these creatures can be more closely examined.
In its magnified habitat, a Yoshi is actually able to hitch a ride on a Springhopper, allowing them to bounce around. This bounce is strong enough to knock butterflies unconscious, destroy flower buds, and scatter leaves on the ground. The Springhopper can be rotated in mid-air, allowing the Yoshi to angle its jump when landing. While Springhoppers are typically green, the Magnified Springhopper habitat includes three more colors: red, yellow and gray. All four Springhoppers can be stacked on top of each other, which in turn allows them to bounce even higher with each additional Springhopper. Collecting all four Springhoppers also grants a goal discovery of three stars.
Yoshi gets to ride a Springhopper in the final habitat of Mr. E's Challenges, Hop or Drop, in which they have to traverse through the course with precise jumps and angles.
Naming[edit]
"Springhopper" is a combination of "spring" and "grasshopper". "Hopper" is derived from "grasshopper", but may also refer to the immature stage of a locust.
When the name is suggested by Mr. E, he says the following:
- “It makes great leaps thanks to its spring-like shape...so how about Springhopper?”
- —Mr. E
