Adobe Flash
Adobe Flash, or simply Flash, is a discontinued multimedia software platform developed by Adobe Inc. It was initially launched in 1996 by FutureWave Software as FutureSplash Animator, before being acquired by Macromedia in 1997 and rebranded Macromedia Flash.[1] Adobe would finally acquire Macromedia in 2005[2] and rebrand the platform as Adobe Flash.
With its built-in scripting language ActionScript, Adobe Flash allowed for quick development of interactive web content, and was in widespread use on the Internet from the late 1990s to the 2010s. Content made in Adobe Flash was viewed using the Adobe Flash Player program, commonly ran as a web browser plug-in. Nintendo made use of Flash for numerous microsites and promotional web games, including many for the Super Mario franchise.
In 2017, Adobe Flash entered its end-of-life, before being discontinued entirely in 2020, being largely supplanted by open standards such as HTML5.[3]
