Community Awards Dossier

Written by: Hooded Pitohui (talk), Waluigi Time (talk) and The 'Shroom Staff

Hello, readers of The 'Shroom! In collaboration with the Awards Committee, we're once again proud to present the Community Awards Dossier for the Community Awards XVIII. Whether you've voted for ten years in a row or this is your first year voting, we ask that you please read the following paragraphs to learn about how Community Awards voting works.

Here, you'll find detailed information on all of the nominees for this year's Community Awards XVIII. The Community Awards recognize and honor users for their contributions to The 'Shroom and to other areas of the community. The Community Dossier offers summaries and links so that readers may refresh their memories of the nominees and their contributions. Please read the presented information and follow the links before placing your votes, and, when viewing images, please remember to click them to view them at a larger size.

The Community Awards polls will be open for only one week, closing at the end of the 27th of June. As you only have one week to vote, you will be able to cast up to four votes at once in any given poll. You may cast these votes in any way you please. If you only want to cast one vote on a given poll, or three votes on a given poll, for instance, you are able to do that. Just remember, once you cast your votes, you will not be able to recast them, so make sure you check all the nominees you want to cast a vote for before you submit your votes!

The winners of these polls will be announced in this year's Awards Ceremony on August 22nd. We hope to see you there!

C11. Favorite Wiki April Fool's Event

This award recognizes the Super Mario Wiki's annual April Fool's jokes.

C11. Favorite Wiki April Fool's Event
Event Description
Mario FPS game (2013) Focused on the development of a grittier reboot of the mainline Super Mario series, with the creation of an article for a first-person shooter game simply titled Mario. It featured a new spin on classic characters and elements of the franchise.
Began the tradition of annual April Fool's jokes, as well as the inclusion of bizarre (yet real) facts about the Mario franchise on the main page's Did You Know section, which would be used in most subsequent years.
BJAODN archive
Year of Waluigi (2014) Focused on the Year of Waluigi, celebrating "the most important Nintendo character", accompanied by various Waluigi-themed announcements. Articles were created for Waluigi to Fitness, a personal trainer application for the Wii U, and Waluigi's Warehouse, a Luigi's Mansion-esque game with more horror elements.
BJAODN archive
Great Ape War (2015) An article was created for the upcoming release of a collectors book known as The Book of Kongs, featuring unused material created by Rare during development of the Donkey Kong Country games. This material notably included content on the "Great Ape War", which also received its own article.
BJAODN archive
Nintendo Cinematic Universe (2016) An article was created for the development of the Nintendo Cinematic Universe in cooperation with Sony Pictures, a spoof of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with films based on Mario, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros., and Pokémon in the works.
The Mario film received an article as well, featuring a reimagining of the events of Super Mario Bros. with Luigi as the main villain, along with promises of other dark and horror elements.
The first year to feature an April Fool's poll on the main page, with an unrelated poll about Poochy worship.
BJAODN archive
Crash Bandicoot Wiki (2017) The wiki was changed to the Crash Bandicoot Wiki, complete with changes to its logo and background. An article covering the Crash Bandicoot franchise was also created.
The April Fool's poll now coincided with the greater theme, with a poll about which version of Crash should be added to the franchise, poking fun at variants of Mario characters.
The 'Shroom was rebranded as "The Wumpa Fruit", with new graphics and renamed teams on Issue 120's main page.
BJAODN archive
New Funky Mode (2018) A "New Funky Mode" graphic was added on the main page, which would take readers to the Funky Main Page, themed after Funky Kong. An article was also created for a script for a film loosely based on the Mario Kart series, known as Fit and Funky.
This year's poll asked readers about their favorite feature of Funky Kong.
BJAODN archive
We Are Pink Donkey Kong Jr. (2019) The wiki was changed to "We Are Pink Donkey Kong Jr.", complete with a new logo, referencing the wiki's long-running in-jokes around the pink palette swap of Donkey Kong Jr. from Donkey Kong Jr. Math. The main page implied that this was due to a takeover from Reggie Fils-Aimé himself.
The main page poll focused on which upcoming educational Mario games readers were most excited about, inspired by Pink Donkey Kong Jr.'s origins in a math game.
The 'Shroom was rebranded as "The Simian Sum", featuring new art assets on the main page.
BJAODN archive

Picture Pilgrimage 2024 Subtitled "a collaborative Scribble journey", this event adapted the scribble format into a collaborative event in which participants took turns adding to a singular, collectively-built image.
Each participant was given three days in which to draw an 1200px by 600px image using black, white, a personal color, and (for the middle 60% of image) the previous participant's personal color.
Each participant received only the last 20% of the previous participant's image, and extended their image from there. In the final 20% set to be passed to the next participant, participants could only use black, white, and their own personal color.
Participants were divided into two tracks, with two players drawing simultaneously.
Once all participants had finished, Yap (talk) drew a final image connecting the first images of each track, and the final image was placed in a special looping viewer developed by Lakituthequick (talk).
Hosted by Yap (talk)

Scribble Labs 2: Double Vision!! A second experimental take on the Scribble art tournament format, this time taking the form of a doubles tournament in which participants arranged themselves into team of two. The tournament took place over five rounds, with an optional bonus sixth round.
Artwork made for this tournament took the form of "scribbles," which unless overridden by a round gimmick were limited to a 600px or 10cm canvas, three colors (black, white, and a color unique to each participant), and a three-hour time limit. Incorporated Discord prompts (with assistance from LTQ) so that users could receive their prompts from a bot at any time.
Each round consisted of one team pitted against another, with player 1 from team A facing off against player 1 from team B and player 2 from team A facing off against player 2 from team B. Each pair of players in a matchup received its own prompt.
Voters chose both their favorite scribbles from the individual matchups and their favorite team effort, with the team that won in at least two of the three categories taking the round.
Each round had an experimental gimmick made to take advantage of the team format. Stack Battle allowed team members to add their partner's color to their palette for four total colors. Relay round had each team member given an hour (and fifteen minutes for week two) to begin a scribble before passing it off to their teammate for completion the next week.
Sabotage Battle had special conditions placed on the drawing by a team member's partner and their partner's opponent. Synergy Battle allowed for three non-black/white colors (a team member's own, one drawn from their partner or the opposing team, and one selected freely). Olympus Battle removed the time limit and all restrictions on communications between partners.
Hosted by Yap (talk), who drew portraits for all players.
Tournament thread
THE Scribble Smorgasbord The fourth iteration of the Scribble Awards tournament format, which continued to maintain a focus on letting artists of all skill levels compete over a period of five weeks (six including an optional round)
Artwork made for this tournament took the form of "scribbles," which were limited to a 600px or 10cm canvas, three colors (black, white, and a color unique to each participant), and a three-hour time limit
Users were given an overall theme for each round, and had to organize a time where they could receive their specific prompt (which would begin the three-hour time limit), with both users in a given matchup receiving the same prompt. Players and spectators would then vote to choose their favorite of the two pieces put forward by each matchup.
This year, the time limit was reduced from four hours to three hours, based on feedback collected in Scribble Labs, and a thread was made in the Awards server to centralize feedback and discussion in a public space
Hosted by Toadbert101 (talk), who drew player portraits and an ongoing comic in each round depicting four co-workers (Marcia, Guy Bötes, an unnamed man, and Toadbert) participating in a special project in hopes of receiving a promotion at work.
Incorporated Discord prompts (with assistance from LTQ) so that users could receive their prompts from a bot at any time
