If confronted with danger, Lava Buds will fire spores – [[Petit Piranha]]s – at enemies, but otherwise will just randomly spit spores. As long as the Lava Piranha itself remains undefeated, Lava Buds will not completely wither. A [[Water Block]] can protect [[Mario]] from their attacks.

A Lava Bud is the smaller stem of a Lava Piranha. Two of them, along with the Lava Piranha they attach to, are the bosses of Chapter 5 in Paper Mario. Both of them branch out of the Lava Piranha while fighting Mario and his group. During the fight, Lava Buds fire Petit Piranhas, and the spores then immediately attack. When their health runs out, the Lava Buds crumple up. As long as the Lava Piranha itself remains undefeated, the Lava Buds do not completely wither, and they eventually regenerate. A Water Block renders Mario near-immune to their attacks. Along with the Petit Piranhas, they will be automatically defeated after the Lava Piranha itself has been defeated.
