Monster Mix-up starts out with all of the [[Mario]] gang at the circus. They see a bunch of weird creatures in cages, like a mix between a [[Chain Chomp]] and a [[Ptooey]]. When the group decides to get a group picture taken, the flash goes off and [[Peach]] is gone. Chaos emerges and everyone is running around and beyond the tent and soon [[Luigi]] is missing too. The remaining three, Mario, [[Toad]], and the [[Mushroom King]], suddenly see a huge flying mixing bowl in the sky with [[Bowser]] driving it. He then takes the king, leaving only Mario and Toad who escape in a nearby cave. As soon as the two remaining good guys think the coast is clear, [[Lemmy Koopa]] flies onto scene on the back of a Soopa Koopa Paratroopa. Mario and Toad dash for cover through a pipe, which leads them to Bowser's castle. Once inside (after picking the lock of the door), Toad and Mario find Peach and the king, who has been mixed with a red [[Koopa Troopa]], locked up in Bowser's dungeon. They are freed and the king-troopa leads them all to Bowser's throne room (the koopa half apparently knew where to go) where they find Luigi is Bowser's grasp. Bowser evilly greets them and decides to mix Mario, Luigi, and a dumb red troopa, and they are thrown into the mixer. Thinking quick, Mario grabs the koopa and throws it up at a block in the air which contains a starman. It falls into the bowl and out comes an invincible Mario plus Luigi with two heads and is as tall as two Luigis. They beat Bowser's guards but good, but when they come for him, he has already escaped through a warp in the back of his throne. But they still have one more problem... how to un-mix the creatures from the monster mixer. "Maybe a soup strainer," Peach suggests...

Plot synopsis[edit]

The story from the back cover:

What Has the Head of a Koopa Troopa and the Body of a Cheep-Cheep?
One of King Bowser Koopa's new mega monsters, that's what. Mario discovers that Bowser is making new and improved Koopa creations by combining Mushroom Kingdom royals with his own creepy creatures. When Mario tries to stop him, the Mario Bros. get mixed-up in ways they never dreamed possible.

As in all Nintendo Adventure Books, you control the action. Only you can make the choices that allow Mario to beat Bowser, Lemmy Koopa, and their fiendish accomplice, the Monster Mixer. Help him crack codes, solve puzzles, conquer mazes, and subdue enemies. You and Mario must outwit the Koopas at their own game—or go down in final defeat!
