List of games organized by system
How did I do? Was I good? I hope I didn't cause any trouble. I added all the games, ports and systems I discovered by researching many websites. I hope my work was helpful. There might be more. Lord Falafel (talk) 21:32, May 28, 2019 (EDT)
Expansion
I think we should branch out. Why do we only cover Nintendo franchises? We have the super Mario wiki and the bulbapedia and others, but where are the sonic wiki, teenage mutant ninja turtles wiki, power rangers wiki and all the others? Why not have wikis of all franchises with obscure media? Think of all the franchises there are. Sure, there are lots of pages made by other people, but we need to be at the top. I have been studying obscure games since new year's eve 2015 and I have 3 notebooks with obscure games that need popularization. What do you think of my idea? Lord Falafel (talk) 23:46, June 10, 2019 (EDT)
- I think it would be disingenuous for NIWA to expand just to "be on top" and if you're passionate about those things then you should create a wiki/network for them! --Steve (talk) 10:48, June 11, 2019 (EDT)
How do I do that? Lord Falafel (talk) 19:35, June 11, 2019 (EDT)
Urgent matters
Do you know any members of the super Mario wiki who live in Japan and speak both Japanese and English and have 120,000 yen? Because an obscure Mario seesaw ride is on Yahoo Japan and it expires in 11 hours. It's called super Mario seesaw takeover. It costs 120,000 yen. We cannot let this obscure piece of Mario history go away. Please find someone really fast. Lord Falafel (talk) 22:10, June 19, 2019 (EDT)
I have the auction ID. It's Q165133918. Lord Falafel (talk) 22:14, June 19, 2019 (EDT)
No matter. Alex95 found it and posted the link to our discord. It's called super Mario seesaw takeover and it was made by Banpresto who was known for making many Japan only arcade machines under the license of the original owners. They made games based on Mario, Ultraman, kamen rider, doraemon, pokémon, Thomas the tank engine and so many anpanman games that you could put the anpanman games alone all in a hotel. Lord Falafel (talk) 01:04, June 20, 2019 (EDT)
I can't login.
I can't login here. This is the user George Jones by the way. I am in Internet Explorer. It says that someone else is trying to hijack my account when it isn't true. Also I have problems with the Marioboards. I login, it says verification failed when I entered my username and password correctly. And it logs me in and logs me out when I try to post. Question is, should I use a different browser? 107.190.144.102 13:57, June 21, 2019 (EDT)
Oh, here's what it says when I try to login. "There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please resubmit the form" 107.190.144.102 13:59, June 21, 2019 (EDT)
I found a fix for the Marioboards problem. But it seems like after trying a different browser I forgot my password for here with no way to retrieve reset it or it. So I'll have to create a new account and ask an admin to block my old account when I create my new account. 107.190.144.102 14:12, June 21, 2019 (EDT)
Yeah I shouldn't of had created a new account. Should I PM you on the forums? 107.190.144.102 14:48, June 21, 2019 (EDT)
I deleted my password and Google suggested it and I forgot because it is so strong and also I can´t get verification Emails to believe me the longest I have been waiting is 3 years so can you PM me on my page or something, please I even made this emergency account so I can edit this page-GreenWeegee (greenThunder2041)now terradon
Another upgrade for the list of games organized by system
I recently thought there's a difference between released games and ports with no available release date information and games that didn't get released everywhere. And there are platforms in the other category that were released and have no available release date information whether they were released in one country or more and should be kept that way, until release date information pops up. But as for games that are released exclusively in 1, 2, 3 or 4 countries, the localizations that haven't been confirmed to exist shouldn't say N/A like released games with no available release date information do, they should say canceled. That is until localized release date information appears on the internet as well. And I had to tell you about this upgrade idea that I thought of bestowing upon the list of games organized by system, because making big upgrades like this without telling someone in a high position is a big no-no, according to the guidelines. And since you reply in a decent amount of time to someone and aren't one of those people in the world who are too busy in their lives to reply to anyone who sends them messages and since you're the founder of this wiki, I thought it'd be best to talk to you about this. Do you think we should do this move? And if not, that's ok. I just don't want this website to confuse the general public. Lord Falafel (talk) 16:44, June 23, 2019 (EDT)
- It should say N/A if a game was not released in a given region. If we know that a game was released in a region but we don't know the date, I think it should say Unknown. I don't know why canceled games are on that list; if a game wasn't released at all I don't think it should be on List of games, I think it should be on List of unreleased media. --Steve (talk) 00:57, June 24, 2019 (EDT)
Unfortunately, Alex95 has been disagreeing with me on including the cancelled Mario party 2 port for the 64DD on the list of unreleased media. I think that is unjustified. Lord Falafel (talk) 01:02, June 24, 2019 (EDT)
- Not so much the game itself, but the source was invalid, as it was citing wikia. If you can find a more proper source, it can be added back; but isn't it just Mario Party 2 and can go on its cut content page? 01:08, June 24, 2019 (EDT)
Yes. Lord Falafel (talk) 01:25, June 24, 2019 (EDT)

Troublemaker
Hey, boss. There's an anonymous user editing HiT Entertainment as the developer for all the flash games on Nintendo arcade. All of them. Super Paper Mario Memory Match, Dr. Mario Vitamin Toss, Tetris DS Puzzle Mode, etc. His number is 99.0.105.95 and I reverted all those edits except 1, which Owen reverted. Lord Falafel (talk) 15:13, July 12, 2019 (EDT)

Ip
We really need to make ALL Ip’s unable to edit, because we need to be able to use warning templates, either that, or what I said above ^^^ [-]€40 vv@(talk · edits) 15:19, July 13, 2019 (EDT)
- Even if a lot of IPs are vandals, there are still quite a few that are legitimate contributors. It can be quite inconvenient to be forced to make an account for every single wiki you want to edit, especially if you only plan on making one or two edits. Blocking IPs could actually deter potentially good contributors from editing, and no one wants that. As for giving IPs warnings, unlike user accounts, IPs can be shared by multiple editors, or adopted by a different editor years later. It's also very easy to change your IP, so there isn't much point. Same reason we don't permaban anonymous users. -YFJ (talk · edits) 14:53, July 14, 2019 (EDT)
Colors
Do you think we should highlight games on the list of games in different colors based on what they are? Maybe even just a few colors? Like ports, remakes, reissues, etc.? Lord Falafel (talk) 21:48, July 14, 2019 (EDT)
- Nah. Those aren't official designations and I don't think we need to add our own twist to it. --Steve (talk) 23:53, July 14, 2019 (EDT)
Potentially moving files
Greetings. I was wondering if you would be willing to use the text replace on two Mario Galaxy files for me. The two files are File:SmG.jpg (spookily is used on exactly 100 pages) and File:Thwomp2.PNG. Both I would argue are not specific enough names, the former uses funky capitalization, and the latter has an uppercase extension. You may be saying "now wait, you haven't moved them to a new name yet!" and you would be right. I wanted to confirm you would be willing to replace text before I actually move them in case you were like "no way". If you do want to assist, I am more than happy to move them to the new names whenever you have the time presented. Thanks a bundle. Trig - 21:34, July 16, 2019 (EDT)
- Sure I can do it. --Steve (talk) 22:16, July 16, 2019 (EDT)

Hello, I'm back again. This time, I would like to move File:Mushroom2.PNG to File:Mushroom.png if possible, so that the capitalization is consistent per policy, and it removes an unnecessary 2. I would try and move it all around, except the image is protected and I can't fix the template that uses it on 2000 images (at least) by myself either. Thank you very much.
The preceding unsigned comment was added by Trig Jegman (talk).

Part three revenge of the sith, I suppose. Could you please move [[:File:NSMB Green Koopa Troopa Artwork.png to File:NSMB Green Koopa Troopa Artwork? This will help distinguish it from the other similar file that I moved, and will be the most specific it can be. Thank you very much. Trig - 23:08, August 15, 2019 (EDT)
I really do hate being a bother, but could you please move File:Star.png to Star.png in accordance to capitalization policy? I don't think the talk page needs to stay as it isn't really applicable anymore. Trig - 14:44, August 17, 2019 (EDT)
Dr. Mario series stages
I'd like to clarify something about the policy that all level articles are to be created: does this include the individual stages in Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure and Dr. Mario World as well? The reason I ask is because Mario jc (talk) had the honors of bringing it up on my talk page, and I'm not exactly sure if what he's saying is correct. (T|C) 12:21, July 21, 2019 (EDT)

Exclude
Hi. I've been thinking and I think it's unnecessary to state what date we retrieved a reference. It doesn't really matter, right? All that matters is we have proof that something is so because we have a source to back it up. Retrieved dates just extend the number of bytes in an invalid way and it's not something a lot of people want to see. Do you think we should exclude retrieved references bytes? Lord Falafel (talk) 10:55, September 9, 2019 (EDT)
- The "date retrieved" is there in case there are edits to the source later, or in case the source is taken down. Adding the date retrieved makes it easier to restore the sources via the Internet Archive, rather than having to fish through page histories to see which edit added the source. -YFJ (talk · edits) 11:00, September 9, 2019 (EDT)

Remove
Do you think we should remove the PC section from the list of games and the list of games by genre? Their games are on other platforms. PC is just another term for personal computer and as far as our coverage goes, those games were released on the Macintosh, Windows and MS-DOS computers and we have all those versions on the list of games. So, the PC section just has duplicate information that is taking up space. What do you think we should do? Lord Falafel (talk) 13:39, September 23, 2019 (EDT)
- Yes, you can remove PC. Most of the platforms in the Other section are personal computers so it doesn't really make sense to have it. --Steve (talk) 14:02, September 23, 2019 (EDT)
Another references page
Should someone create a page called list of Mario references in the Mario franchise? Lord Falafel (talk) 12:56, September 24, 2019 (EDT)
- Since game pages have references to other games and references in later games sections, that would be redundant. --Steve (talk) 13:11, September 24, 2019 (EDT)
Image files
Should we forbid SVG files? Lord Falafel (talk) 13:46, September 26, 2019 (EDT)
- No. --Steve (talk) 13:52, September 26, 2019 (EDT)
- We use them all the time, mostly for stuff like logos. Mario Kart 8 has a lot of them. Trig - 14:01, September 26, 2019 (EDT)

Beans
Hi, since both of my proposals on splitting the Beans in the Mario & Luigi series were lambasted by several users, I'd like to get your input before proposing anything else on the matter. This is the list of beans from each game:
- Superstar Saga:
- Partners in Time:
- Just a regular Bean
- Bowser's Inside Story, Dream Team, Paper Jam, Minion Quest, and Bowser Jr.'s Journey:
- Bros. Bean
- Bros. Bean DX
- Defense Bean
- Defense Bean DX
- Flying EXP Bean S
- Flying EXP Bean M
- Flying EXP Bean L
- Flying EXP Bean DX
- Heart Bean
- Heart Bean DX
- Melee EXP Bean S
- Melee EXP Bean M
- Melee EXP Bean L
- Melee EXP Bean DX
- Power Bean
- Power Bean DX
- Ranged EXP Bean S
- Ranged EXP Bean M
- Ranged EXP Bean L
- Ranged EXP Bean DX
- Speed Bean
- Speed Bean DX
- Spirit Bean
- Stache Bean
- Stache Bean DX
- Super EXP Bean S
- Super EXP Bean M
- Super EXP Bean L
- Super EXP Bean DX
Superstar Saga's beans are for making coffee blends, Partners in Time's beans are for trading with Fawful, and the beans in Bowser's Inside Story, Dream Team, Paper Jam, Minion Quest, and Bowser Jr.'s Journey are for increasing certain stats. I'd like to get your input here: what should be split out and what shouldn't? (T|C) 14:52, September 29, 2019 (EDT)
- You know my general posture is to give an article to things with a unique name, but in a case like this it's probably more useful to the reader to have everything in one place than have a lot of very small articles. I defer to the proposal outcomes. Might as well create redirects for those red links. --Steve (talk) 16:12, September 29, 2019 (EDT)
- I don't think what occurred with your proposals was something that could be called lambasting - it seemed more like your proposals needed a bit more consideration with regards to various aspects of the potential split prior to actually putting the vote into effect. -- Lord G. matters. 19:12, September 29, 2019 (EDT)
@Porplemontage: Sorry to bring this to your attention so late, but I think you might also want to comment on how this matter relates to this proposal (specifically the comments section), something I forgot to bring up previously. Cheers. (T|C) 18:49, October 1, 2019 (EDT)
Code overwrite
Do you think we should have sandboxes automatically show up alongside talk, contributions and uploads when a user is brought to another user's page after they selected their name? I think it'd be very helpful and so much easier for users to be aware of what everyone is working on. Because if people are left in the dark about that, they won't know what pages have been created. Or what pages are being created. As a bonus, if the curious user wants to help contribute to the new page if it's a game, movie, show, book, anything else and they don't choose to turn on the edit notification bell, they can look at the edit history of the sandbox or sandboxes they look at and it will be right there to select. What do you think we should do? Lord Falafel (talk) 21:12, September 30, 2019 (EDT)
- Speaking entirely for myself, but: Users can already link their sandboxes on their userpage, should they so choose, and anyone curious about the edit history can use the appropriate history tab on the subpage, regardless of if they watch the page or not. Automating the appearances of personal userpages might have a nonzero chance of being harmful, since it comes off as trying to force user engagement and interest where such may not always exist (and trying to automate it all but defeats the purpose). At best, it doesn't really add anything much, and reads more like a solution looking for a problem. -- Lord G. matters. 21:20, September 30, 2019 (EDT)
What did you do? Lord Falafel (talk) 16:42, October 1, 2019 (EDT)
Template removal
Should we disable the template for Wikipedia pages when writing them down like this Wikipedia: but not like this [[wikipedia: |]] and only having that latter one available to be taken to a Wikipedia page when clicked? Lord Falafel (talk) 18:11, October 15, 2019 (EDT)
Another question. I tried adding links to YouTube videos with Mario references in them on the page called list of Mario references on the internet and it said there were too many. Did we run out of space for bytes? I didn't think that was possible. Should we make a separate page called list of Mario references on YouTube? Lord Falafel (talk) 18:16, October 15, 2019 (EDT)
No, but there is. Believe me. Lord Falafel (talk) 18:21, October 15, 2019 (EDT)
- (list in question). There are 49 references on this page. COuld it be that the video is already used as a reference? Trig - 18:22, October 15, 2019 (EDT)
No. It told me there were too many. Lord Falafel (talk) 18:29, October 15, 2019 (EDT)
Automatic editing
Do you think we should rewrite the wiki's code a bit for image file pages, so that an edit can automatically be done to say what page or pages use the image? And not just when the image is added to a page but also reveal all edits that have been done to add an image to a page? Just a thought, because there are so many images on this wiki and not all of the pages for the images say what pages are using the images. People might've forgotten to do that, so I thought having it automatically say what page is using the image would be great. Sorry if this sounds confusing. Lord Falafel (talk) 19:29, October 19, 2019 (EDT)
Is anyone going to respond to this? Lord Falafel (talk) 11:00, October 24, 2019 (EDT)
A recurring problem with a certain user's uploads
For some bizarre reason, nearly every audio file uploaded by Wynn Liaw (talk) has the same recurring problem where it doesn't work properly on the wiki; more specifically, the play button doesn't appear at all (and believe me, I tried this on both the file pages and by testing on {{media table}}). Since I don't think it's entirely their fault, and because I highly doubt that discussing the issue with them will solve the problem, I'd like to get your input on this user's uploads. Text replacement accidentally changed quotes
Dear Porplemontage,
I see that you have run bots to do Text replacement - "\[\[Princess Peach's Castle(\]|#|\|)" to "[[Peach's Castle$1"
, which in some cases has changed the text of wiki articles. While changing our own description of the Marioverse has no problem, changing quotes in our articles could affect our accuracy.
For example, this edit has changed the first piece of Toad Town News in Paper Mario,
A few days ago, Princess Peach's Castle was stolen.
to
A few days ago, Peach's Castle was stolen.
However, the text dump of Paper Mario shows that that piece of Toad Town News is indeed
A few days ago, Princess Peach's Castle was stolen.
in the original game.

OGG is everyone's friend
Now I know this has already been brought up but once again, myself and other users cannot view the re-uploads/uploads from Wynn Liaw. From what I gather, the Safari browser might be the issue (HTML5 doesn't standardize it, because the internet told me!) but if there is some form of work-around as you mentioned to Toadette, it may have accidentally fallen out-of-date. See this for an example. Thanks! Trig - 18:11, December 11, 2019 (EST)

Template question
Hello. Is it possible to code this template so that the answer boxes only appear once you fill in their corresponding parameter? ("answer1", "answer2" etc.) For example, if I want the fourth box not to appear, I can simply not add anything to the "answer4" field. I'm asking because this quiz only has three answers for each question instead of the usual four, so it would be very handy to make use of the same template for this one. Otherwise I would have to create a separate template that only has three answer boxes and I don't want that... Thanks! -- KOOPA CON CARNE 22:00, February 23, 2020 (EST)

Is it ok if I ask you MediaWiki-related questions here if ever I need help? This could benefit others developing their own wikis, because then they'll be able to see how to do it (just like when Recent Changes got disabled on WiKirby). Results May Vary (talk) 17:27, April 22, 2020 (EDT)

Shouldn't we disable the option for IPs to edit?
Many IPs have been straight-up vandals. They change PNG and JPG images to weird names (e.g. [[File:Mario.png]] to [[File:Mari.png]]), add content containing bad words, and even just changing pages in general! Is there an option to require all contributors to log in like Bulbapedia and formerly WiKirby? That would add an extra layer of defense to our wiki.
(I asked Mario jc but he told me to message you).
201 21:21, April 27, 2020 (EDT)
- IP's = more edits. More bad edits, but also more good edits. So revert the bad ones and keep the good ones. Now you have more good edits overall. Better for the health of the wiki. Just make sure you have enough staff to keep up with the vandals. Bureaucrats manage staff. --Steve (talk) 22:08, April 27, 2020 (EDT)
- Thanks. I may not be active all the time but I will check to see if any vandals attack the wiki. 201 22:19, April 27, 2020 (EDT)
Yoshi tables
In step with the already-existent CSS for Donkey Kong tables, can you add a green table CSS to be used in articles related to the Yoshi franchise? I would currently like to incorporate the enemy lists on Yoshi's New Island level pages in such tables, and further apply this standard to other Yoshi pages. Thank you in advance. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 13:15, May 8, 2020 (EDT)
- The DK table coloring is a special case since it was brought over from DK Wiki, but honestly I don't really love getting super colorful with everything. I'd say make a proposal to see if people want to add more table colors. Plain tables could certainly be used in the meantime. --Steve (talk) 13:40, May 8, 2020 (EDT)

I can’t use my iPad
Right now, I can’t access the Super Mario Wiki at all on my iPad. However, on the Kingdom Hearts Wiki, which I know you also own, I can still access every page besides the recent changes page. Both wikis still work fine on my phone, although editing is really uncomfortable on my phone. I’m hoping there is something you can do about this soon. Nightwicked Bowser
- Little update, the entire wiki only seems to not work if I am logged in, logged out only the recent changes page doesn't work, and yes I was logged out on the Kingdom Hearts Wiki when I looked at it earlier. What Links Here page not syncing up with page caches correctly
Okay, so I'm having issues with Special:WhatLinksHere, in that it now practically never responds to page caches being purged. This has happened to me twice already, where I moved Big Koopa Paratroopa and Star Gem; though I changed the links on the respective navtemplates, the links from the transclusions of Template:P&DSMBE still show even after an hour has passed (which is when I would assume most caches would be purged), and the only way to make the links on the WhatLinksHere list disappear is to manually purge them one by one. I'm pretty sure this is a technical issue, but I do want to know on the off-chance that I move another page soon. (T|C) 23:26, November 14, 2020 (EST)
- The wiki makes these updates relatively slowly so they are spread out and there's no burst of processing all at once. An update of 700+ links will take a while, but it will process eventually, you don't have to manually purge. --Steve (talk) 00:38, November 15, 2020 (EST)

Searching
Hi, is there a way I can change back to the old search system in my preferences? Or do I need to create a common.js page for that? (T|C) 11:00, January 18, 2021 (EST)

- It didn't work as intended, I'm afraid. Does it take a while for the settings to actually take effect? (T|C) 13:48, January 18, 2021 (EST)
- No. --Steve (talk) 13:51, January 18, 2021 (EST)
- Alright, I guess that I should reiterate my question then. Is there any backup or alternative that you know of that changes search functionality in my preferences that strictly limits searching in the search box to alphabetical order? (T|C) 16:17, January 18, 2021 (EST)
- The suggestions are now generated and sorted based on page quality and relevancy, while being able to correct for small typos. To make the behavior closer to how it was, set search completion to "Classic prefix search" in the preferences Search tab. With typo correction disabled, the results will match closer to what you type, but there's no way for them to be listed alphabetically. For purely alphabetical functionality, Special:PrefixIndex is an option. --Steve (talk) 00:59, January 19, 2021 (EST)

Some edits don't update when logged out
I noticed the last couple of times I've made edits, they don't show up when I log out of my account. It doesn't just happen to my edits either, as I've seen other people's edits not updating when I'm logged out and it seems to happen to random edits. I've noticed this issue a few days ago and it's pretty annoying because I keep thinking people have reverted my edits when that's not the case. I know it's not something with my computer because the same issue occurs on my mobile device as well as on different web browsers. Do you have any solution to this? LuigiMaster123 21:55, March 6, 2021 (EST)
- It's because I'm working on the cache right now, I really didn't think you'd be logging out and checking your edits. --Steve (talk) 22:01, March 6, 2021 (EST)
- Oh, okay that makes sense. Sorry about that and thanks for letting me know. LuigiMaster123 22:03, March 6, 2021 (EST)
Category:Places >>> Category:Locations
Hello, Porplemontage.
If you've seen the proposals lately, you'll know that one of my proposals recently passed. We've decided to change every instance of Category:Places to Category:Locations, as it sounds more formal as well as for consistency in general.
Example: Category:Luigi's Mansion Places >>> Category:Luigi's Mansion Locations
We were wondering if you could run a bot to automatically change the category links once they're moved. I can update you once I've done some of this. Thanks.
Green Star 15:03, April 15, 2021 (EDT)
- Hi. I will do the moves and replacements, but here's the thing. Your proposal is based on a flawed premise, since you state that "way more categories are referred to as locations rather than places, and [this] would be easier and more efficient to enact." This is wrong, 48 categories use Places while only 13 use Locations. So for the sake of consistency across all categories and Category:Places, List of places, and the least strain on the server, I am going to move the the relatively few Locations categories to Places. --Steve (talk) 15:56, April 15, 2021 (EDT)
Lengthy Media
Hey Steve! Long time, no see. I hope you are well.
I have been working on reducing the length of media files found in the articles of that category you made. I noticed that some pages aren't showing up in it though, despite having media files over 30 seconds. I wasn't sure if there was a reason for that? This page has at least one file in a media table that is over 30 seconds (over 4 minutes). I've also noticed some other pages not showing up in the category when they have the media file directly linked/embedded — Piranha Plant Slide's infobox comes to mind, it was originally not in the category even before the length of its file was reduced. (I can try to find a better example or link to some >30s files on a test page if that would help, since the media files on that page are shorter now.)
Dunno if it's even anything that warrants attention, but I wanted to bring it up to you since you'd already put so much work into making pages/files like that more easily identifiable. Thanks for reading! — Stooben Rooben 13:56, May 19, 2021 (EDT)
- Hey, I hope you're well too! That category is limited since it's solely based off the user-entered values for the
length
parameters of the {{media table}} template. If the template isn't used or the parameter is missing for a file, that article won't be added to the category. Unfortunately I don't know of an easy way to just grab the length values directly from the files and use them for categorization, but I figured this was better than nothing for at least a place to start. Thanks for helping out! --Steve (talk) 14:27, May 19, 2021 (EDT)
- That makes a lot of sense. I saw that the category mentioned the
length
parameter may need to be updated, but didn't realize that the category itself was tied to it. Cool stuff! And no worries, it is definitely a huge help and a great start for reducing the file lengths. After the category is cleared, I'll probably just hit up media by game or quality requested to find the stragglers. I really appreciate the clarification. Thanks for all you do, man. — Stooben Rooben 14:51, May 19, 2021 (EDT)
- That makes a lot of sense. I saw that the category mentioned the
YouTube images guideline
As per proposal, a while ago I created a category for YouTube-related pictures. In it, I added a brief guideline for what seemed reasonable to add to and exclude from that category—for instance, the guideline doesn’t allow screenshots of all uploads portraying random gameplay or animated show footage unless it’s specially designed by the creator to be shown on YouTube. I would appreciate if you could tweak the guideline to your own liking, thus giving some form of proprietor endorsement. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 07:55, May 28, 2021 (EDT)
- Hi there, I don't need to sign off on everything, but I appreciate the thought and nothing sticks out that I would change. Nice job on the categories! --Steve (talk) 01:35, May 30, 2021 (EDT)
Ban-evading anon
For a few months now, the staff members have had to block so many IP addresses for evading bans and making edits in names in other languages sections without leaving spaces after commas. Is there anything you can do to stop this from continuing? Nightwicked Bowser 09:21, June 1, 2021 (EDT)
- Sure, I've added an error message if an anon adds any commas to an article without succeeding spaces. Let's see what happens. --Steve (talk) 12:25, June 1, 2021 (EDT)
Can you do this to force English quotation marks "..." around Korean words, or if that's not possible, force spaces around Asian quotation marks「...」? The anon's ignoring messages again (and tbh I'm doubting it's even a real person, the behaviour seems very bot-like). Mario JC 21:54, March 24, 2022 (EDT)
- Ok, I've added something to help enforce proper quotation marks for Korean ("") and Japanese (「」) phrases. --Steve (talk) 02:00, March 25, 2022 (EDT)

Hi, do you know why multiframe is now displaying a white background on all transparencies? MarioWiki:Featured articles protection
Why was the page protected to only be able to be edited by admins? I think whenever anyone starts a FA nomination they should be able to edit that page and put the nomination in the table right away, and then make the necessary changes as soon as a nomination ends. At the very least, I think autoconfirmed user level is enough for that page. Nightwicked Bowser 16:05, September 28, 2021 (EDT)

Refs without references
When a page contains <ref>...</ref>
but no <references/>
, the ref text will be silently placed at the end of the article, without a header and possibly following any navigation templates. Examples include the current revision of Triple Mushrooms and Petal Meadows. Is there any way to auto-category such pages for maintenance?
If it's not possible, it would still be possible to find such pages by searching for insource:"ref" -insource:"references" -insource:"ref needed"
, though there may be false positives and false negatives. --Dine2017 (talk) 22:34, November 22, 2021 (EST)

MediaWiki Category Enhancement Plug-Ins
It's been a while! Anyways, you wouldn't happen to know of any MediaWiki extensions that can sort, filter, or preview things in the category namespace? Image categories on Super Mario Wiki in general aren't organized very well. It would be nice if there was a preview mode where a previous or next button existed in the Category namespace instead of clicking individually each image. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 21:48, December 15, 2021 (EST)
- Hey, what up. I don't know of any extensions like that, but for the thing about not having to click each image, you could go here and check "Enable Media Viewer" for a way to cycle between images. --Steve (talk) 23:56, December 15, 2021 (EST)
- I see you have updated the software quite a bit since the last time I was here too. Anyways, I find it to be a double-edged sword. I like it for categories, but not so much articles. It's All or Nothing. Thanks for the help. Hopefully my extension suggestion gives some ideas for searching or keeping a lookout on the MediaWiki database to enhance the category namespace in the future. I mean, look at Category:Super Mario Odyssey images! --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 00:48, December 16, 2021 (EST)

Name Change
Hi, is it possible for you to delete File:SM3DW Super Bell Hill.oga for now? I'm trying to handle some messy name changes that I accidentally did. WildWario (talk) 10:38, December 17, 2021 (EST)
- Not until these links are updated. --Steve (talk) 10:41, December 17, 2021 (EST)
Damage template
Due to the fact that the Damage template warns of possible file damage, I made it red to command more attention. I feel this is important due to file corruption.

"Show previews without reloading the page" is missing from Preferences
I don't know when that happened, but I don't have that setting anymore. Previewing edits without reloading is a useful feature. -Vipz (talk) 08:47, February 2, 2022 (EST)
- Live previews don't show warnings in this version of MediaWiki, so it's been disabled, since we don't want a subset of users not receiving that information. Fortunately, this has been fixed in future MediaWiki versions, and the feature will be re-enabled in about a year. --Steve (talk) 09:14, February 2, 2022 (EST)
- Which warnings don't display that are a priority over having this feature? -Vipz (talk) 16:04, February 3, 2022 (EST)
- Template warnings, Module warnings, TemplateStyle warnings, etc. Check this out: a very good user was doing some template work, previewing, saving the page... only to find that they weren't warned about duplicate template parameters due to using live preview. When some users aren't getting that info, it's an inconsistent experience. Live preview is a "nice to have" feature that's not exactly critical; if there's an issue with it, it's likely to be the one on the chopping block. The warnings are there for a reason, and we want to rest assured that they are making it to 100% of users. We can't expect users to follow warning that aren't being shown to them. But after we upgrade to MediaWiki 1.39 and turn that feature back on... should be fun --Steve (talk) 18:42, February 3, 2022 (EST)

Mario Kart course names
Yep, I think it's time we revisit this. Since the newly announced Booster Course Pass clunkily uses "Tour" as an abbreviation for courses debuting in Mario Kart Tour, I think we should completely do away with console abbreviations in the titles for said articles, while merely acknowledging that the games use console abbreviations for classic courses. Plus, Mario Kart Tour is still in service, and probably still will be by the time the first two Booster Course Pass cups drop.
So what I'm saying is, is it okay with you if I start a multi-option proposal for Mario Kart course naming conventions? I would suggest every naming convention we've cycled through over time, as well as my preferred option first and foremost. (T|C) 22:48, February 9, 2022 (EST)
- Take a look at this: Console abbreviations are alive and well when it comes to the older console courses. I love that those line up with exactly what we have, and it makes our pages super discoverable for players searching what they see in-game (with no old game identifiers needed for repeated course titles - games they may have never even played [using a game identifier for content that appears across multiple games is not ideal]). So that system continues to deliver for us; there's no way we're moving all those again.
- Regarding Tour: I agree, both Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Tour are currently "live games" (and oddly, Tour was released more recently). Based on that, we have two options here: 1) Continue to prioritize Tour's normal course titles over the classic titles, not moving any Tour courses to a "Tour" prefix until Mario Kart Tour is basically abandoned or unplayable (and when the Tour service does shut down, it's likely that the only way any of those courses will be playable at all is with a clunky prefix attached, so it might not seem so weird then). Or 2) Just moving Tour courses to the "Tour" prefix right away based on the fact that this DLC is the newer release and latest iteration of those courses. I think that both of these options are perfectly acceptable, and if the community feels more strongly about one over the other then that's what we should do.
- I really don't see this DLC as cause for another grand reshuffling of those pages; if there was some more radical change to the convention then I'd be open to it. I hope you understand --Steve (talk) 08:33, February 10, 2022 (EST)
- While I do still understand your cause for concern, is it still okay if I suggest my preferred options with your your suggested additions thrown in? I just think only a portion of our readers follow your theorized sense of logic, though that's probably just me. (T|C) 10:19, February 10, 2022 (EST)
- No, because the existing classic titles are perfect where they are. The only thing we have to determine is if we should move the Mario Kart Tour courses as the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC releases or after Mario Kart Tour leaves service. --Steve (talk) 10:40, February 10, 2022 (EST)
- Just a heads-up, I searched up a few Mario Kart tracks with and without the console abbreviations. There were far less results with the console abbreviations than there were without. This even applies to Kalimari Desert 2, which had the abbreviation upon being introduced.

- And, with all due respect, I don't think "perfect" is a good descriptor for the status quo at all. I think we should at least try soliciting discussion on the options I've suggested, and if they're not supported by a majority of users, then that's fine. (T|C) 12:34, February 10, 2022 (EST)
The only thing is, we can't use the first game names as the identifiers.
- The courses have appeared in more than one game. When a subject has appeared in more than one game, we use something else for the identifier. It's not acceptable to use a game name for something that has appeared in multiple games because it implies that if you're playing a different game, that's not the thing you're looking for.
- If you are looking for "3DS Rainbow Road" that you read while playing Mario Kart Tour, and you search that and see "3DS Rainbow Road" in the Google results, you know you're in business. "Rainbow Road (Mario Kart 7)" is misleading since you're not currently playing Mario Kart 7, you're playing Mario Kart Tour, and game names should only be used when something appears in one game.
- So it should use some other identifier. In an identifier system, "(3DS)" is an option since it directly incorporates a piece of info that the player sees in-game, which is why we used to do that. That was the compromise, but it brought a bunch of inconsistencies and a weird thing of guessing the identifier for the current game.
Going full retro solves those issues while incorporating the prefix commonly used by Nintendo in and outside of the games. And it has us using the latest iteration of each name. It's sort of like a pre-identifier, it doesn't have to be taken literally as part of the title, but it's there and it's helpful (part of why it's small).
So as you continue to think about your ideal system, you need to address that. Can't use old game names for subjects that appear in multiple games. Ideally, the system would incorporate the console abbreviation in some way as well, since that's what Nintendo themselves use as their own "identifiers." Using just the console abbreviation as an identifier makes it misleading for the Donut Plains 1 level versus the "Donut Plains 1 (SNES)" course, but putting the prefix first like how they appear in game makes them more of a unique title than at the end, so there is no parenthesis identifier needed. Having to use a console identifier versus a non-course was strange. But SNES Donut Plains 1 has appeared in multiple Kart games, so we can't do "Donut Plains 1 (Super Mario Kart)" either. Same with like DS Luigi's Mansion, we can't do "Luigi's Mansion (Mario Kart DS)" since it appears in multiple games, and "Luigi's Mansion (DS)" is a little weird since it implies it's like a DS game, but DS Luigi's Mansion just works while matching its modern usage in the latest games. Luckily, a lot of things sort of fall into place with the retro prefixes, since they all have unique article titles.
Regarding your search results thing: That's because adding the prefix makes the search more specific, so it narrows down the results when you add the prefix. But number of results is not even the metric that I'm talking about here, what matters is the number of people searching each term, and more specifically what terms are on their mind for the titles that would need identifiers (e.g. Rainbow Road). Because for a course with a unique name, they are going to find that regardless (so you could make a case to only use retro prefixes where an identifier would otherwise be needed [which is basically what we used to do except we used console abbreviation identifiers when needed], but as we learned that has its own issues, it would make things wildly inconsistent, and we don't base everything 100% militantly on search, but it is a part of the equation). But when users are inserting their own "identifiers" in the search box, they are more often inserting a console abbreviation than an old game name. Console abbreviations are what's on their mind, and that's what they're scanning for as they read the results, so those are what should be incorporated into any system. I predict that the older these original games get, the less and less they'll come up in search queries, since a lot of people will simply know them as "SNES whatever" (cementing them as the common name).
So it's only a question of moving the Tour courses as the DLC drops or after Tour support ends. I guess the default based on current policy would be to move them on release, but if we want to delay Tour course moves while both games are in service, that could be a proposal. --Steve (talk) 14:33, February 10, 2022 (EST)
- Regarding the "more-than-one-game" argument, there's also the Warp Spaces from Mario Party 4; despite also appearing in Mario Party: Island Tour, they still need a game identifier because there's the Warp Spaces from Mario Party 10. Also, we can switch to type identifiers for things like Luigi's Mansion or Donut Plains 1, specifically "race course" or "battle course". Tell you what, how about I draft this up extensively and then contact you once I'm done? (T|C) 16:04, February 10, 2022 (EST)
- Using game identifiers for more than one game is bad and discouraged for the reasons I laid out. Yes, there are cases where it happens. If possible, a better identifier should be used. If not, then it's a one-off less-than-ideal scenario. When something is bad, pointing out that the bad thing happens in other areas of the wiki does not make that thing good, and it's certainly not an argument for implementing the bad thing on a more pronounced scale wiki-wide. And using those identifiers for Luigi's Mansion and Donut Plains 1, you lose the console abbreviation, which is a huge boon to the way folks are commonly thinking about these course titles. Ok, if you can present me with your full presentation, I may have a counter/some ideas. --Steve (talk) 18:00, February 10, 2022 (EST)
Recent ban due to CappyThrow Account
Hello, I sent an email about this ban a few weeks ago and have not been responded too. I contacted Mario jc, the person who dealt the ban and also have not been responded too. Some years ago my older sibling created an account here. He has completely left the house at this point. When I tried to create an account, I was blocked saying that I was a double account of CappyThrow. I am not him. Nobody seems to be responding and I was hoping you might. Everyone is just ignoring me. Mario jc also blocked CappyThrow saying that he used offensive language over email - right after I sent my email. Considering everyone thinks I am him, I am concerned I may have gotten him in trouble. I assure you, my email was not intended to be offensive if this is my fault. Here is the contents of the email: Hello, I am sorry but I believe we have entered a misunderstanding. CappyCapture is not me but my sibling. To be quite honest, the person behind CappyCapture has moved out entirely. I completely understand where the ban came from and have no hard feelings, as I see how easy and obvious of a mistake this is to make. Especially with how rude he was - I didn't realize until I was fumbling around for a contact address and spotted his comments on Mario JC's page. However I and CappyCapture are not one. I request unbannishment? It would be much appreciated. Sincerest apologies for the mixup. CaptainCappy So as you can see, I don't believe I was actually offensive in this. I am very confused right now and appear to be being ignored.
Please help out, CaptainCappy
Responsive tables
Hi. Is there any way/plan to make tables on the wiki responsive? For example, can tables like this use a vertical format on narrow screens? --Dine2017 (talk) 01:44, April 9, 2022 (EDT)
- I made this table responsive. Check out the diff and it can be applied elsewhere. --Steve (talk) 09:17, April 9, 2022 (EDT)
