"The Pit and the Pendulums" is the second mission of Tick Tock Clock in Super Mario 64, as well as in Super Mario 64 DS, where it was retooled into a Star Switch mission and is known as "The Pendulum Switch Star", but otherwise remains nearly identical. This mission can be done at any of the clock's speeds.
Layout[edit]
The player needs to climb the clockworks until they reach the pole with the Amp circling it. After climbing the pole, they need to cross the platform with the Heave-Ho and jump across a spinning platform to reach two swinging pendulums. The player needs to jump and use the platform between the pendulums without getting pushed off to reach the Power Star. An alternate method is to avoid using the platforms between the pendulums by going right next to the Blue Coin Block and long-jumping to the area with the Star.
In Super Mario 64 DS, there is a Star Switch on the pathway to the Star. This gives the player a time limit to collect the Star before the time runs out. The final platform has also been slightly modified, but otherwise the mission remains nearly identical to that of the original.

Naming[edit]
The name of this mission in Super Mario 64 is a pun on the title of the short story "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe.
