In Super Mario Sunshine, various Beehives can be found in Bianco Hills, Gelato Beach and Pianta Village. If Mario gets too close to a Beehive or knocks one down, the Bees will swarm him, causing damage if he gets stung. Yoshi can eat these Bees for one Coin each. The last Bee to be eaten always gives up a Blue Coin or 1-Up Mushroom.

Bees in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake are encountered as enemies alongside another type of enemy, Beehoss, which can summon Bees from its honeycomb during battle. Another species of Bees appears in Super Mario Galaxy. These Bees are different from the ones encountered in Super Mario Sunshine in that they are the same size as Mario, and are capable of conversing with him. These Bees are also friendly to Mario, and serve the Queen Bee. In addition, the Bee Mushroom makes its first appearance in this game, which allows Mario to transform into Bee Mario. In this form, Mario is able to flutter through the air for a brief period of time, and also stick to and climb Honeycomb Walls.
Bees in the Super Smash Bros. series are part of the Beehive item in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. A swarm of bees are released from the Beehive when thrown at an opponent and attack them, but the bees also target a fighter if they attack their beehive.

The Bees of Mushroom World behave and appear similarly to their Real World counterpart, with very little difference between the two, except certain varieties are shown to have a single pair of wings, unlike the two pairs of wings all Real World Bees share. They often reside in beehives where they will tend to their queen and produce honey, Bees have also been shown to reside within a species of living beehives known as Beehoss with whom they share a symbiotic relationship. Bees, and their numerous subbranches are extremely territorial and will often attack in large numbers, even the more humanoid species are known to be violent.

Bees also have a cosmic counterpart who, unlike their Mushroom World cousins are far more advanced and civilized, having a fully established kingdom which reigns over numerous colonized planets throughout the universe. Much like regular Bees, their duties consist of collecting honey and tending to their noble queen. These Bees are anthropomorphic in appearance, with all of them wearing the same attire which consists of a white ruff around their neck and light blue gloves and shoes. Despite their friendly nature they appear to have rather pointy teeth.

Bees appear in the Super Mario franchise as stinging insects, mostly commonly in the form of enemies.

History[edit]

Yoshi's Story[edit]

Sprite of a bee swarm in Yoshi's Story

A small variety of Bees[1] appear in Yoshi's Story and fly around their beehive in swarms. They prevent Yoshi from passing, forming a large hand shape with their swarm, so Yoshi has to walk slowly to prevent the Bees from bothering him. Bees attack Yoshi if he throws an egg at their hive. The bigger bumblebees appear in the level Cloud Cruising. They do not try to injure Yoshi, but he will get stung by the bumblebee if he comes in contact. They can be defeated by a simple stomp, or by being eaten.

Mario Party series[edit]

Bees in the Mario Party series appear on boards and in minigames alike. In Mario Party 2 and Mario Party Superstars, beehives appear in the minigame Honeycomb Havoc, where if a player winds up with one, they are attacked by bees and eliminated from the game. Bees in Mario Party 7 appear in Big Dripper, where players must duck down to avoid the swarm while collecting their dripping honey. Additionally, players pilot bee-like aircraft in the minigame Buzzstormer. Bees in Mario Party DS appear as part of an Event Space in DK's Stone Statue, where they emerge from their hive with coins that the player can collect; additionally, Bees in the minigame Hedge Honcho sting players if touched with a stylus, so the player has to wait for them to buzz off. Bees in Mario Party 10 resemble honeybees and are the main obstacles of the minigame Beeline Shrine.

Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

Bees[2] in Super Mario Sunshine are part of various Beehives in Bianco Hills, Gelato Beach, and Pianta Village, and if Mario gets too close to a Beehive or knocks one down, the Bees swarm him, causing damage if he gets stung. A Bee can release a Coin if eaten by Yoshi, though the last Bee of a Beehive always releases either a Blue Coin or a 1-Up Mushroom. If Mario talks to an NPC while bees are chasing him, he will be pushed in random directions mid-conversation and will not take damage.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Beehoss
A Beehoss and its Bees in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

Bees in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake are encountered as enemies alongside another type of enemy, Beehoss, which can summon Bees from its honeycomb during battle. Bees in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey mode are used as the Beehoss's projectiles. In the remake, they use their design from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]

Bees in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team are encountered alongside Beehoss once more, and if any bee is counterattacked and defeated on the Beehoss's turn, the remaining bees will return to perform an unavoidable attack on either Mario or Luigi, depending on who counterattacked them.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Mario + Rabbids series[edit]

Bees in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope are ambient animals.
