Species Rat
First appearance Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (1992)
Latest appearance Mario vs. Wario (1993)

The Sewer Rat[1] is the boss of the Macro Zone in the game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It is a rat with a rather prominent nose which it apparently uses for defense. Its fight is similar to the battle with Morton Koopa Jr. and Roy Koopa during the events of Super Mario World. The Sewer Rat will run up walls and into pipes and will eventually crawl to the top of the ceiling and fall straight onto Mario. If the plumber jumps on top of the Sewer Rat three times or hits it with six fireballs, the creature will be defeated. The rat will then fall off the screen, and Mario will get one of his six Golden Coins.

The Sewer Rat also appears in the first Mario vs. Wario comic. On his way to visit Wario, the Sewer Rat was the first enemy Mario encountered. Mario mistakenly assumed that the Sewer Rat just wanted to have a party, and pulled its needle-point nose off to use as a party-popper, causing the rat to faint.
