History in the Animal Crossing franchise
First generation of Animal Crossing
In Dōbutsu no Mori and its Nintendo GameCube ports Dōbutsu no Mori+, Animal Crossing, and Dōbutsu no Mori e+ (collectively known as the first generation of Animal Crossing games), various NES and Famicom titles can be obtained as items and played within the game itself.
In all first-generation games, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Golf, and Pinball are among the NES games that can be attained by the player via the NPC Wisp, treasure hunts, or shaking trees while having good luck. The former two can also be won in raffles, while the latter two can be purchased from Crazy Redd's Furniture Emporium.
Introduced in the GameCube versions were Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong Jr., and Wario's Woods. The former two can only be acquired using secret codes, which could be generated on an official Animal Crossing website in 2002 and given to Tom Nook in-game. Wario's Woods can only be obtained via the Animal Island mode using a Game Boy Advance and Link Cable.
Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. are also obtainable via secret codes in Dōbutsu no Mori+, though no way to generate these codes was ever made officially available by Nintendo. Super Mario Bros. was only officially available as a prize, in the form of a special Memory Card with the item's data, given away to 30 winners in a sweepstakes by the magazine Shūkan Famitsu in 2001; the game's data is present in Animal Crossing, but completely unobtainable via official means. Mario Bros. could be obtained in the American version of Animal Crossing via an e-Reader card; it is unobtainable in the European version due to e-Reader functionality being removed. Both games were removed completely from Dōbutsu no Mori e+.
Super Mario-themed furniture was introduced with the Mario Theme in Animal Crossing.
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
- Several Mario-specific items can be obtained by purchasing fortune cookies with Play Coins.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp
- There were fishing events with Cheep Cheep, Cheep Chomp, and Eep Cheep.
- Various Mario-specific items were also in the game, some of which were unique.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The version 1.8.0 update of Animal Crossing: New Horizons released on February 25, 2021 introduced the Mario Series of furniture and clothing, coinciding with the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary. This includes the Pipe furniture item, which functions like the object it is based on. If the player has two placed on their island, they can hop in one and exit the other; if three or more are placed, the destination Pipe will be randomized.
In the version 3.0 update released on January 15, 2026, several classic Nintendo systems were added as obtainable furniture items, each with an associated game that can be played with an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The associated game for the Game Boy item is Dr. Mario.
Super Smash Bros. series
