Ruler Mario

Mario Land[1] is a location in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It is an island where the game's events take place. Mario Land consists of six primary areas: the Space Zone, Macro Zone, Turtle Zone, Pumpkin Zone, Mario Zone, and Tree Zone. There is also a single Hippo stage leading to the Space Zone, an area branching off the path between the Tree Zone and Macro Zone, and a Toad House-like area on the southern end of Mario Land. On the center of the island is Mario's castle. To the direct south of the castle lies the casino and the starting area, and to the west is the Scenic Course filled with Goombas and Para-Goombas.

Descriptions of Mario Land's identity vary between media. The official guide Nintendo Kōshiki Guidebook Super Mario Land 2 - 6-tsu no Kinka states in the introduction, 「マリオが、自分の国に帰ってきました」("Mario has returned to his country"),[2] and, in the developer interview in the same book, director Hiroji Kiyotake explains that Mario Land's creation came about from their desire for Mario to fight to retrieve something that he owned instead of the usual damsel in distress.[3] Wario also mentions that Mario Land is the country where Mario lives in volume 7 of Super Mario-kun.[4] Some issues of Nintendo Power refer to Mario Land differently: in the November issue of 1992, Wario calls it Mario's former home,[5] while the January issue of 1994 refers to it as Mario's kingdom.[6] In the Super Mario Kodansha manga, the premise of Super Mario Land 2 - 6-tsu no Kinka 1 describes Mario Land as Mario's home country,[7] while Luigi also later explains that it is their birthplace, leaving Princess Peach and Princess Daisy surprised at the idea that Mario is from a royal family. Lastly, Wario adds they left they royal duties to "play heroes" in the Mushroom Kingdom.[8] During the story, Mario's childhood flashbacks are set in Mario Land, and both of his parents are also depicted as the former rulers of the castle.[9] In the after-story, Mario also reprises his role as the king of Mario Land, before passing the crown to Hippo. The land does not appear in later volumes; in the Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island adaptation, Mario and Luigi's childhood home is the same Toad House seen in the game's ending, with no specification on if it is located in Mario Land or the Mushroom Kingdom.

History[edit]

During the events of Super Mario Land, while Mario is off in Sarasaland to rescue Princess Daisy in Super Mario Land, Wario invades Mario Land and conquers it, transforming his castle and spreading the six Golden Coins across the zones. When Mario returns and discovers this, he then travels through the six zones to retrieve the coins so he could face Wario and reclaim his land.
