MAR10 Day[1] (also written as Mar10 Day,[2] MAR10 DAY,[3] Mario day,[4] or Mario Day[5]), or National Mario Day,[6] is a celebration of the Super Mario franchise that takes place on March 10 annually because a shortening of the date, "MAR10", spells similar to Mario's name, especially in all capital letters.[7][8] Fans use the holiday to set up their own festivities, such as simply playing Super Mario games or dressing up as Mario,[9] among others.

MAR10 Day was conceived as an unofficial occasion by fans of the Super Mario franchise,[10] but Nintendo began acknowledging and endorsing it as a formal holiday since 2015.[11][12]

History[edit]

2015[edit]

In 2015, on Twitter, Nintendo of America wished a happy MAR10 Day to Smosh Games, a YouTube channel, and asked what the channel's YouTubers' favorite moment in a Super Mario game was.[13] Meanwhile, Nintendo UK asked players which Super Mario game they were playing that day.[11]

2016[edit]

Nintendo extended its celebration in 2016 by hosting several sweepstakes on Twitter for MAR10 Day. Users could enter the contests if they changed to a certain profile picture in addition to using the hashtags "#MAR10Day" and "#SweepsEntry" to mention their favorite moment involving Super Mario. For each sweepstake, the prizes were:

Nintendo also celebrated on YouTube by posting the video "Celebrate Mar. 10 - Mario Day!" on its official channel. The video features a person dressed as Mario turning objects into ones related to Super Mario, like notepads into Nintendo 3DS systems, and he spawns several Super Mario plush toys on a desk in the office.[5]

2017[edit]

Nintendo's plans in 2017 were relatively big, especially when Nintendo and the Starlight Children's Foundation partnered by providing new designs for its gowns while making a donation to create 2,000 gowns.[12] They had a Messenger Camera that was usable from March 10 at 5 a.m. PT to March 12 at 11:59 p.m. PT[12] by listing several Super Mario games for sale on Amazon. Further discounts were provided at My Nintendo, such as a 30% off discount on Mario Kart 8. Play Nintendo also posted a quiz based on the holiday to its website.

The holiday gained media attention, when an ABC newscast headlined "National Mario Day" occurred on MAR10 Day, with the reporter talking about the holiday and Mario himself.[18]

2018[edit]

MAR10 Day was larger in 2018. One could have Mario drive around in a Pipe Frame on Google Maps, resulting from a partnership deal between Nintendo and Google. A hidden ? Block was also hidden next to the start button when the start and destination fields were being filled.[19][20] Nintendo not only discounted the full version of Super Mario Run for 50 percent but also hosted an in-game event titled "It's All About Mario Event", where all Super Mario–related items are in fixed appearance rates in Super Bonus Game. As it did the previous year, My Nintendo also added rewards, such as the "Mario's Mighty Mustache" theme on the Nintendo 3DS.[20]

As part of the holiday, items from the Super Mario franchise were available to craft in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp for a limited time.[21][22]

2019[edit]

In 2019, anyone who bought Super Mario Odyssey, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Party, or Mario Tennis Aces in Europe between March 8 and 10 would earn double Gold Points.[23] Meanwhile, Nintendo's North American division released some discounts, including several Super Mario games on My Nintendo,[24] the five aforementioned titles to $39.99 in participating retailers,[25] and even the Nintendo Switch to $329.98 with one of the five Super Mario games.[25] The "It's All About Mario Event" returned in Super Mario Run, this time giving the player 10 Rally Tickets as a log-in bonus.

An episode of Nintendo Minute, titled "Mar10 Day Character Bracket: Mario's Enemies - Nintendo Minute", was uploaded to Nintendo's YouTube channel, featuring hosts Kit and Krysta ranking several enemies of the Super Mario franchise by several categories, such as which of them would be the most annoying pet.[26] Nintendo of America also posted a tweet asking users how they plan to celebrate MAR10 Day.[27] There were also many Super Mario activities at Nintendo New York, with sponsorship from Frito-Lay Variety Packs.[2]

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp celebrated MAR10 Day again. Every player was gifted Mario's hat and outfit,[28] one could craft various Super Mario–themed flooring and wallpaper,[29] and several furniture from the prior event also returned. The Fishing Tourney 12 featured Cheep Cheeps, Eep Cheeps, Cheep Chomps, and Bloopers as fish that the player could catch.[30]

2020[edit]

The Mario Bros. Tour in Mario Kart Tour featured Mario and Luigi wearing their Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels outfits, respectively, and ran until the actual MAR10 Day. Super Mario Maker 2, Super Mario Party, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and Yoshi's Crafted World were discounted at $20 cheaper for the American Nintendo eShop from March 8, 2020 (9:00 a.m. PT) to March 14, 2020 (11:59 p.m. PT), at a price of $39.99.[31] Both Nintendo's and LEGO's Twitter accounts featured a teaser for a LEGO and Super Mario crossover, eventually announced as LEGO Super Mario.[32]

No Super Mario crossover event occurred in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, unlike during the two previous years, because Nintendo did an event focused on the-then upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

2021[edit]

2021 had lower official activity during MAR10 Day. Super Mario Maker 2, Mario Tennis Aces, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Super Mario Party were for sale at 35% off. The Mario Tour of Mario Kart Tour deliberately began on MAR10 Day. A special Know Your Nintendo video was published on Nintendo's YouTube channel the same day and featured three questions and two bonus questions involving the Super Mario franchise.[33]

Various events related to the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary appeared in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

2022[edit]

MAR10 Day on 2022 also lacked much official activity. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Luigi's Mansion 3 and its DLC packs, Yoshi's Crafted World, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 received discounts.[34] There were a few announcements, which included Super Nintendo World being scheduled to open in Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023,[35] a LEGO Princess Peach figurine, and three LEGO Super Mario sets.[36]
