In-game description

Full Speed Ahead is a Time Attack Challenge in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Objective[edit]

This challenge takes place an original course that reuses assets from courses in Acorn Plains. Unlike Time Attack Trial, this course is more complex. It makes use of slopes and Turning Floors, encouraging the player to make use of sliding to move faster. (This is also noted by the challenge's name in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, which specifically call out sliding.) There are contains more blocks compared to Time Attack Trial, and this challenge's course includes semisolid platforms where that challenge did not. There is even a split path near the end of the course where the player can either stay at ground level and run through small caves, or jump up and instead run along the tops of those caves and floating Hard Blocks. There are still no ? Blocks, which means there are no power-ups.

The player has to reach the Goal Pole under 40 seconds, failing the challenge if they run out of time or are defeated by the enemies.

Course Layout[edit]

The course starts with a downward slope just ahead. Two Goombas walk up the slope. Flat ground proceeds from the bottom of the slope, joined by a row of floating Brick Blocks. Next is a very shallow hill with three Goombas. The area ends with a pipe that creates Goombas, with the elevation of the ground beyond it matching the pipe's height. There are two steps down, followed by flat ground. There are three semisolid platforms above this stretch, arranged in an overlapping staircase. Three green Paratroopas jump down these platforms. The ground below them rises a short step in elevation using a counterclockwise Turning Floor, which a Goomba is walking down. Next up, the ground drops back down and leads into a pit. Just before the pit are two floating Brick Blocks, and above the pit are three floating Hard Blocks. They are arranged such that one could jump from the Brick Blocks to the Hard Blocks, or dash across the topmost semisolid platform from just prior and perform a long jump to the Hard Blocks.

After the pit there is a stretch of ground followed by a staircase of three pipes. The middle one contains a Piranha Plant. A forth pipe. matches the elevation of the third pipe, then there is a bed of six pipes matching the elevation of the first pipe in the staircase. All six pipes in the bed contain Piranha Plants. The ground continues at the elevation of the bed of pipes, but a clockwise Turning Floor leads downward. There is a Goomba walking up the Turning Floor. Afterward there are three pipes extending up from a pit, with the outer pipes matching the elevation of the ground while the middle pipe contains a Piranha Plant and is slightly lower.

Once past those pipes, the course reaches the split path. The player can choose to run along a lower path with sloped terrain, passing through two small caves and jumping over a Piranha Plant in a valley between the caves. There is also a Goomba in each cave. The area ends with a jump over a large divot with a Big Piranha Plant, which leads to a downward slope into a third slightly larger cave. There are two Goombas in the third cave The player can also choose to jump on top of the first cave, pass over the Piranha Plant by using a set of four Hard Blocks floating high above it, then jump to land on the top of the second cave. Next they would bypass the Big Piranha Plant with a set of five Hard Blocks floating high above it. They can then land on top of the third cave. This path reconnects to the lower path at the upcoming Turning Floor. Alternatively, the top of the third cave is low enough to reach with a jump after landing on the slope following the Big Piranha Plant.

After the third cave, the ground rises a bit using a slope but goes back down with a medium sized clockwise Turning Floor. There is a Goomba near the left edge of the Turning Floor. After the Turning Floor, there is a short area of flat ground followed by the Goal Pole.
