Extra Points[1] is a recurring sound effect that originally plays in the Famicom/NES release of Mario Bros. when the game is paused or when extra points are collected after a bonus round. In future games, this sound effect is reused for pausing the game.

Mario Bros. marks the first appearance of "Extra Points".

Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. features an abridged arrangement of "Extra Points", and is used exclusively when pausing the game. This arrangement is the version most future arrangements are based off of. This arrangement is reused in VS. Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario Bros. 3 for the same purpose.

Super Mario World

Super Mario World includes an arrangement of "Extra Points", and is reused for the same purpose in Super Mario All-Stars, including Super Mario Bros. 2, which did not originally feature a pause sound effect.
