Yoshi's Island DS is the direct sequel of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and the indirect sequel to Yoshi's Story. This game has fewer levels, but has updated graphics, new babies, and a whole new adventure. The graphics still retain the trademark "pen and pencil" style of the original.

One of it's new features is an Island Museum of enemies in the game accessible at any time. In this museum all the enemies the Yoshis have beaten with Yoshi Eggs will appear here.

Story

Template:Spoiler Kamek and his evil Toadies have stolen all the babies from the Mushroom Kingdom and other areas and taken them to a mysterious floating castle! However the Stork comes in and hits two Toadies...the Toadies drop Baby Mario and Baby Peach.

The babies and the stork land in Yoshi's Island where the Yoshis decide to help the two babies get all the other babies back and Baby Luigi!

In their adventure Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Wario and Baby Bowser join as well. However later Baby Wario leaves with the Bandits and Baby Bowser leaves with Kamek, who drops him. Baby DK, however, stays.

After beating Big Guy the Stilted it is revealed that the future Bowser is looking for 7 Star Children...kids that have magical stars in them that can make anyone who have them take over the world!

Bowser and Kamek have come from the future looking for the Star Children however of all the babies he caught no one is a Star Children (except for Baby Luigi who hid from inspection).

Later Yoshi and the babies all get to Bowser's Castle where Baby Bowser thinks Yoshi is here to steal the treasure! Baby Bowser fights Yoshi but Yoshi defeats him.

Bowser is angry at what Yoshi did to his younger self and fights Yoshi but gets defeated, however Kamek helps Bowser become giant. Bowser is again defeated, and Bowser and Kamek go to their own time and Yoshi's Island is at peace again. Template:Endspoiler

Modes

For each of the three player files available, there are four modes to choose from: Adventure, Mini-games, Time Trial (unlockable) and Options.

Adventure

The real gameplay comes in adventure mode, similarly played out like the original. Throughout five unique worlds, a different colored Yoshi takes on one out of eight levels, with a mini-boss in Level 4 and a boss in Level 8 of each world. Enemies, items, and coins litter the levels, as well as collectibles. When a Yoshi is hit by an enemy, the baby is lodged loose from him, and the star power – the source of the protective bubble that keeps the Magikoopas from taking the baby – goes down by one star per second. If that number goes down to 0, Magikoopas take the baby and a life is lost. The star power starts at 10 in each level, and if a baby is recovered with less than 10 stars, the star power automatically goes back to 10 again, slowly. It maxes out at 30. Groups of 5 stars often come in Winged Clouds and crates.

Minigames

Play various Mini-games the player has unlocked in Adventure Mode. All the mini-games are Tulip-Shooter, Flutter Challenge, Bouncy Maze, Speed-Eater and Egg Toss. Achieving a high score in any minigame will award the player with a 1-UP. Harder versions of all the minigames can be unlocked by collecting all the Baby Coins in a world.

Time Trial

Unlockable once you beat the game, in Time Trial it's just like Adventure, however with time. Here you see how fast you can go through the level. Strangely the time never stops running, not even if you press start.

Options

Because Yoshi's Island DS uses the Y and X buttons, not A and B, it can confuse some players who have played the original. Here you can change between X/Y or A/B button use and Egg throwing controls.

Yoshi's Moves

Yoshi and his friends have many different moves on their adventure. Here's a list of them:

Jumping and Fluttering

You press B (or A according to your options) to jump and press B again and hold it, to Flutter. This helps you get to higher places. This move was also in the original game, and has been in all Yoshi games.

Swallowing

To make eggs, Yoshi has to swallow and enemy and turn it onto an egg. Or while the enemy is in a Yoshi's mouth, the Yoshi can spit it out at other objects.

Ground Pound

To make this move a Yoshi must jump and quickly press down on the control pad. The Yoshi will pound the ground and is useful defeated enemies and bosses and it will also let Yoshis make pillars go down and soft stone disappear.

Throwing Eggs

When you eat an enemy it will turn into an egg. By pressing R Yoshi can aim the egg he made at various things, and throw it. If the player pressed R by accident, he can cancel Yoshi from throwing an egg by pressing down on the pad (or pressing B).

Babies

New to the sequel is at certain spots, Stork Stops let Yoshi change babies, providing different unique abilities:

  • Baby Mario – M Blocks become tangible, providing stepping stones. A Yoshi can dash, giving the speed required to escape from certain enemies. Yoshi can flutter far and normally.
  • Baby Peach – With her parasol, lets Yoshi flutter longer and a bit higher, but also a bit shorter than Mario. Her parasol can fly wind currents up or down. Her eggs don't bounce off walls.
  • Baby DK – Can climb vines and chains, carrying Yoshi with him. Can do a DK Dash Attack, defeating most enemies. His eggs don't bounce, but they go faster and create a mini-explosion that can grab more coins and even defeat enemies or activate winged clouds just blocked off by solid wall.
  • Baby Wario – He is accompanied by a magnet that attracts coins facing it (even through solid wall) and can move Magnet Blocks and Magnet Platforms.
  • Baby Bowser – Can breathe fire, but Yoshi cannot swallow any enemies. Often, though, a fire blast is the equivalent of an egg, able to break winged clouds and destroy dirt walls as well as melting ice, but the blasts don't bounce off walls.

Forms

A Yoshi can morph into a vehicle with a Morph Bubble. Morph Bubbles appear many times in the game. There are three forms:

Helicopter: The helicopter is able to make a Yoshi fly for a short time.
Submarine: The submarine can make a Yoshi swim underwater (Yoshis in the game, can't swim underwater). Mole Tank: This tank makes a Yoshi able to dig through small openings and dirt.

Some forms form the original game like the train and the car forms aren't in this game.

Vehicles

Yoshis can also hop into/onto various vehicles. There are five vehicles:

Kangaroo: The Kangaroo hops on its own, but pressing and holding left or right tells which way the Kangaroo should go, and how far it should go.
Stilts: Hopping on stilts allows the Yoshi to walk around in the same manner as the Stilt Guy does.
Carts: Hopping in a cart makes it roll along a track on its own. Players cannot change the direction.
Skiis: Found in some ice/snow levels, again players cannot change the direction of skiis however jumping is possible.
Rocket: Some huts lead to 'space launch pads', allowing Yoshi to hop into a rocket and blast into space. Pressing left and right turns the rocket and Y gives extra thrust.

Items and Objects

As the Yoshi's go in their adventure, there will be many items and objects they will need to collect.

  • Yoshi Eggs are the center of the game and Yoshi's main weapon.
  • Coins are scattered throughout the game. Every hundred coins collected gives Yoshi an extra life. There are also Red Coins which look normal until touched.
  • Winged Clouds, like ? Blocks give items such as keys and stars.
  • Keys unlock doors.
  • Hint Blocks give hints when hit to help the player past a certain point.
  • Baby Coins are hidden, one in each level. Collecting them all unlocks harder version of the mini-games.
  • Super Stars are rare - only three appear in the game. Grabbing one gives Baby Mario a cape and invincibility.
  • Stork Stops allow Yoshi to switch between babies. They're easy to find and usually placed where you need them.

Bonus Challenges

Any Flowers you collect in a level will appear in the Spinning Goal Ring at the end of a level. After a Yoshi passes through the ring, the spinning will get slower. If it stops on a flower, the player will be able to play a mini-game and probably earn 1-Ups.

Bosses

A Yoshi takes aim at Gilbert the Gooey, a boss in the game.

Like in the original game, each world has two castles, with a boss battle taking place in each. Kamek once again uses his magic to enlarge common enemies.

Trivia

  • Yoshi's Island DS was going to have Wi-Fi, later cut-off.
  • It was also going to be called Yoshi's Island 2.
  • The boxart shows Baby Wario and Baby Bowser riding Yoshis they never ride in the game.
  • It was originally that you could only destroy enemies by jumping on them with Baby Mario, as seen in the E3 demo version.
  • When it was released in Japan, the game was number one on the charts for a full two weeks.
  • In the opening movie, Baby Link can be seen as one of the babies that are kidnapped.
