Ganchans[1][2] are rock-like enemies from Super Mario Land that are found in the mountainous and spike-filled areas of the Easton Kingdom of Sarasaland. They are large, indestructible boulders that bound around unceasingly. They can be used as convenient platforms to get across long stretches of spikes or to reach high areas out of reach, mostly in World 3-1. Hiyoihoi also uses Ganchans as projectile weapons in World 3-3. Although Ganchans appear as generic boulders, they are living beings.
Ganchan are depicted both sentient and non-living rocks in the Super Mario Land manga: the first type are the Ganchan that let Mario cross the spikes, after Mekakuribō stretches the plumber's face to resemble the one of a "fellow moai", tricking them into helping them cross the spike pits. The non-living Ganchan are the boulders tossed by Hiyoihoi.
In Super Mario-kun, faceless Ganchan appear in volume 3 being tossed by Hiyoihoi. Mario uses Yoshi as a shield, making him eats the boulders, then tosses him like a bowling ball against the moai, striking them down.
